After pizza fortifications for lunch during our Venice Art Trek, we set up our easels on a back canal near our hotel while the photographers went off in search of more costumes and scenery to photograph. The architecture in Venice is fascinating and in every direction there is so much ornate detail, that I wanted to capture all of the unusual elements in this one little doorway.

On the first night of our Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop that my husband, Scott Williams, and I led in southern France, we arrived at our B and B and went into town that evening for a wine tasting and amazing dinner at a Michelin-star restaurant. The food was out of this world, the weather was perfect for dining outside, and our new group was great company!
 
The next morning, our painters stayed at our b and b and painted right there since the grounds were so beautiful.The light raking across the balcony and shutters was so dramatic, and I loved how the gnarly trees framed the composition to make a window within a window. Meanwhile, the photographers visited a nearby 11th century Abbey and took some incredible photographs. We met up later that day and headed to the nearby town of Arles for lunch.

This was a great opportunity to play with shapes and color. The geraniums were in full bloom with their red flowers creating a stark contrast with the terra cotta pots and white background. You also get the elevation change as they climb the stairs with the railing pulling you upward.

Our hotel in Sevilla, Spain had a rooftop terrace that overlooked the city and I couldn’t resist spending some time there to paint. I also had a waiter that would bring me snacks and drinks. That is the way to paint!

On the last day of our Spain Art Trek, we visited Plaza de España, a Moorish paradisiacal gathering place with a half mile of tiled fountains, pavilions, ponds and lush plantings. Some of my painters captured the river and bridges flowing through the center of the park, while I focused more on the unusual architectural elements.

I found this magical spot while wandering the gardens at the Alcazar in Sevilla, Spain. It was a beautiful scene and a great way to beat the heat and enjoy some time in the shade listening to the water fountain flow.

Nothing says rural America like a red barn. Just seeing one takes us to farm country with the smell of fresh cut hay, the sound of tractors and horses running in the fields.  Creating this gave me a sense of nostalgia and a connection to all of our roots.!

“Rural View IV” Palette Knife Painting from Iceland by Niki Gulley

Continuing our journey along the west coast of Iceland, I was taken by their simplistic architecture, often topped with bright red roofs to add a pop of color to the natural landscape. In the next several paintings, you’ll see I chose a different house or barn each day and set out to capture its shape, the colors and light hitting the structure, and the picturesque, idyllic, quiet scenery surrounding the building in all directions. Here is my next one, another small 5” x 7” study where I came in close so you get a sense of scale for the size of the barn and the mountain behind it. My main focus for this painting was contrasting simplistic objects, repeating shapes and direction, texture and movement in my strokes.

Day 5:  Ireland ART TREK
Killarney

On the next morning of our Ireland Art Trek, we left for Killarney, making a pit stop in the adorable thatch-roofed town of Adare. After exploring and grabbing lunch, we drove onto our lodging for the next few nights, a 16th century castle, fit for a king! Dinner was also delicious that evening in the castle’s dining room.
