“Reclining Thoughts II” Textured Aspen Tree painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

“Reclining Thoughts” ©2018 Niki Gulley

40″ x 30” textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

In this painting, I wanted you to you to experience the joy of looking up into the treetops – just like you did when you were a kid. Lying on the ground, not a care in the world, you gaze in wonderment as the clouds drift by. Choosing warm yellows, reds and greens and utilizing thick chunky staccato strokes add to that childlike whimsy and I hope you are transported back to a happy, carefree time and place.

Painting and Photographing Don Quixote’s Windmills with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

Day 2 – La Mancha, Spain: Andalusia Art Trek
SOLD • 9″ x 12″ textured oil painting by Niki Gulley

Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop Led by Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

Just Sold! After a day and half in Toledo, we headed to La Mancha, following in Don Quixote’s footsteps. Larger than life and perched on this steep cliff overlooking the surrounding farmland, everyone had a great time trying to capture the giants on canvas or film. After finishing, we drove onto our next destination, Granada, and checked into our hotel. That evening we dined on an 18 course authentic Andalusian dinner while our host taught us all about Spanish foods, customs, wines and sherries. Another fun-filled day and a great way to end the evening!

Winter Aspen Tree Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

“Climbing Trees” ©2018 Niki Gulley
40” x 30” oil on canvas

Growing up in the midwest, I loved the first snowfall of the year when everything would get a beautiful dusting of pristine white powder, including even the tiniest of branches in the treetops above. If you caught that moment early enough in the morning before anything had disturbed the intricate frosted web, it was just magical. Then the sun would start rising and peeking through the limbs, and everything would sparkle like diamonds. In Climbing Trees, I wanted to capture that beautiful moment when the sunlight dances through the icing on the treetops and you can feel yourself looking up in wonderment just like you did when you were a kid.

New “Chit Chat” Palette Knife Aspen Tree Painting by Niki Gulley

“Chit Chat” ©2018 Niki Gulley
30″ x 48″ textured oil painting

Shimmering in golden light, this backlit grove of aspen trees reaches tall, leaning left and then right towards the sun as it grew. The peeling trunks almost seem to move, even chatting with one another. A few trees weren’t so lucky and lay fallen at their feet, while the whole scene is filled with color, texture and movement to suggest the power of nature and its ability to enhance your spirit.

“Aqua Dreams” Palette Knife Oil Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Aqua Dreams” ©2018 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 36” x 60” textured oil on canvas

Just Sold! When we arrived at this tranquil spot, the early morning light was very cool in color, but as the sun began to rise from the horizon, it shone this beautiful warm light that shimmered on the water’s surface and cast its hope of what was to come from the brand new day. I remember the peacefulness I felt in that moment, and a sense that anything was possible. In Aqua Dreams, by showing the contrast in the cool aqua/blues in the foreground waters against the warm golden glow on the distant pond’s edge, I wanted to share that feeling of hope and promise communicated by nature.

New “April’s Palette II” Bluebonnet Painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

“April’s Palette II,” Texas Hill Country ©2018 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 12″ x 18″ textured oil painting

Just Sold! Recently we loaded up the car and headed south to visit the Texas Hill Country to see the wildflowers in bloom. While not as prolific as some years, the thick patches we found did not disappoint. It’s so exciting to see a massive carpet of blue across our usually green hills. I love how the bluebonnets signal that spring has arrived! For our first stop, I chose this colorful field north of Austin and set my easel up to capture its beauty. I was drawn to not only the vivid wildflowers, but also the gentle hills and this rocky ledge they were perched upon. With some fluffy clouds drifting overhead, it turned out to be a perfect day to paint! I hope you can feel the joy and energy of springtime in Texas.
