“Memories of Sunshine II” Palette Knife Sunflower Painting by Niki Gulley

“Memories of Sunshine II” ©2018 Niki Gulley
30″ x 40″ textured painting on wrap around canvas

“Memories of Sunshine” was inspired by our trip to Provence, France last summer. Our timing was perfect and the sunflowers were in full bloom. Their bright, smiling faces as big as dinner plates, the sun dappled path leading you deep into the golden field to the quaint stone farmhouse in the distance, and a beautiful summer day with a few peaceful clouds drifting by made for the ideal subject. The resulting painting is full of warmth, color and texture, and my hope is that when you gaze into it, this piece lifts your spirits and brightens up any spot in your home.

Just Sold – “Autumn Journey” Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

“Autumn Journey” ©2018 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 20″ x 16″ textured oil painting

Just Sold through Seaside Gallery! Every day we were in New England, we’d drive through this gorgeous fall canopy. So one morning when the light was sparkling through the leaves, I decided to set my easel up along the road to capture its beauty and mystery. I loved the dramatic shadows on the road beckoning you into the autumn glow in the distance. The dappled light also created a warmth leading your eye through the painting, onto the journey ahead.

Sunflower Palette Knife Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Sunny Sentiments” ©2018 Niki Gulley
24″ x 12″ textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

Inspired by our travels to Provence, I painted these uplifting sunflowers with extremely thick oil paint and palette knife so that the resulting image leaps off the canvas and is loaded with energy, color and texture.

New “Field of Sunshine II” Palette Knife Sunflower Painting by Niki Gulley

“Sunny Horizon” ©2018 Niki Gulley
30″ x 48″ textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

Inspired by a trip through the Midwest, I was filled with joy seeing this solid field of gold! At the same time, the clouds above were so voluminous and dramatic that I had to recreate the scene. The horizon stretches out before us as festive blossoms dance in the early evening glow. Leaving my strokes loose and free and working with palette knife to create volume and texture, all add to the energy of the painting. I hope you, too, can feel the peace and happiness of being surrounded by nature in all of its glory, staring into the clouds while soaking in the moment.

“Aqua Dreams” Palette Knife Oil Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Aqua Dreams” ©2018 Niki Gulley
36” x 60” textured oil on canvas

When we arrived at this tranquil spot, the early morning light was very cool in color, but as the sun began to rise from the horizon, it shone this beautiful warm light that shimmered on the water’s surface and cast its hope of what was to come from the brand new day. I remember the peacefulness I felt in that moment, and a sense that anything was possible. In Aqua Dreams, by showing the contrast in the cool aqua/blues in the foreground waters against the warm golden glow on the distant pond’s edge, I wanted to share that feeling of hope and promise communicated by nature.

New “Marching into Autumn” Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

“Marching into Autumn” ©2018 Niki Gulley
10″ x 20″ textured oil on canvas

I painted this colorful autumn scene near my home when the fall foliage was first starting to appear. I loved the vibrant reds, oranges and yellows of the cypress contrasted against the multitude of greens surrounding it. The patterns of the shadows underneath the trees created a sort of rhythm and I played up the angles of the trees and strokes to add to that feeling of a driving beat. I hope you, too, can feel the energy and joy of being surrounded by nature as autumn approaches.

New Tuscany Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

“Peaceful Pursuit,” Tuscany ©2018 Niki Gulley
30″ x 48” textured oil painting on gallery wrap canvas

This painting is inspired from a trip to Tuscany we took a few years ago when my husband, who is a professional photographer, and I spent about a week scouring every inch of the countryside for the best poppy fields and views. I was particularly drawn to this peaceful scene, even if the poppies weren’t as prolific as in other fields. I loved the calming, sweeping shapes of the hills and the vibrant reds contrasting against the softer grasses and white wildflowers. The road beckons you back to the stone farmhouse in the distance, while dramatic voluminous clouds dance across the sky, mimicking the foreground shapes and creating a sense of harmony. Repeating colors throughout, I love how the Impressionists used vibrant hues to add to the mood of a scene and create flow, so I brought my contemporary approach with broad strokes and thick texture to their traditions. I hope you, too, can feel a sense of peace and joy when you gaze into this Tuscan landscape.

New “Cloud Gazing” Palette Knife Oil Painting by Niki Gulley

Cloud Gazing ©2018 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 24” x 24” textured oil painting on gallery wrap canvas

Just Sold through the Good Art Company Gallery! Inspirerd by a trip to Italy, my husband wanted to stop and photograph this lone stone building. I was also attracted to its glowing white facade in the dramatic light that often fills Tuscany. The clouds above were so voluminous and massive compared to the small structure below, that the contrast really gives you a sense of the open space and surrounding hillsides. Capturing the drama of the sky and the joy in the poppy-filled hillside with palette knife while leaving my strokes loose and free, all add to the energy of that moment. I hope you, too, can feel the peace and happiness of being surrounded by nature in all of its glory, staring into the clouds while dreaming about what the future holds.
