New Palette Knife Ocean Painting by Niki Gulley

“Atlantic Coastline II” ©2020 Niki Gulley
12″ x 9″ textured oil painting on canvas panel

I wanted this painting to be about the power of the ocean to lift your spirits. Painting this piece on location, as the sun rose, I wanted to capture the gorgeous rock formations and the beautiful colors in the ocean. Whenever I visit the coastline I always feel rejuvenated, and I hope I’ve translated that onto the canvas for you to experience it, too.

New Palette Knife Oil Painting from Venice by Niki Gulley

“Venetian Textures II” ©2021 Niki Gulley

16″ x 12″ textured oil on canvas panel

I started this piece during our Plein Air / Photography Art Trek Workshop that my husband, Scott Williams, and I lead in Venice, Italy. We had painted several other grand locations, but decided on day three to paint a more intimate vignette of the canals. Since the whole city is on water, I love how their “garage doors” are actually for their boats! In this painting, I wanted to focus on all of the wonderful architectural textures and age of the homes as seen in the peeling stucco, crumbling bricks and weathered wood. Luckily I had a steady stream of gondolas passing as I was painting so I could add one in to set the mood.

“Afternoon in the Park,” San Miguel, Mexico

12″ x 16″ Textured Oil on Canvas Panel

Some generous collectors of mine invited us to stay with them in their beautiful winter home in San Miguel, Mexico. We loved the colorful architecture and the lush plantings everywhere, and I just had to capture a little of that beauty on canvas. I hope these colorful scenes perk up your day.

New “Bougainvillea Archway” by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Bougainvillea Archway” ©2021 Niki Gulley

12″ x 16″ textured oil painting on canvas panel

Framed in 3” espresso frame. • $950 framed / $800 unframed

Painted on location in Spain, these Bougainvillea vines were so gorgeous and prolific that I just had to paint them. Gently reaching across and cascading over the trellis and wrapping themselves around white washed columns, these magenta beauties formed the perfect welcoming entrance framing the intricate turquoise doorway. Purple shadows from plumbago plantings lead you along the cobbled path, inviting you to step inside and enjoy the view.

New “Planted Sunshine” Palette Knife Sunflower Painting by Niki Gulley

“Planted Sunshine” ©2021 Niki Gulley

16″ x 20″ textured mixed media painting on canvas panel

A fellow painter friend of mine and I arrived at this sunflower field very early in the morning to capture the sun as it was beginning to rise and illuminate the landscape with golden light. We set up next to the road so that we weren’t infringing on the property. We had gotten about 45 minutes into our paintings and you know what happens with best laid plans! It turns out that the owner of the farm must not be a fan of painters because we were shooed away and threatened with fines if we didn’t leave. So memorizing that gorgeous light while I was packing up, I finished the painting at home from my started sketch, photos, and memories.

“Waves of Wildflowers IV” Palette Knife Oil Painting by Niki Gulley

“Waves of Wildflowers IV”  ©2021 Niki Gulley
SOLD • ” x 24″ textured oil painting

Just Sold through the Good Art Company Gallery! Painted on location, I was drawn to this expansive mass of yellow wildflowers, stretching all the way from foreground to background blooming in the Hill Country. The explosion of sunny color made me feel so happy that I wanted to capture that joy and excitement in my painting. Hints of bluebonnets and Indian Paintbrush dot the landscape and long sweeping shapes that flow across the horizontal panorama canvas add peace and happiness as you’re being surrounded by Texas Wildflowers on a beautiful spring day.

New “Running Red II” Textured Poppy Painting by Niki Gulley

“Running Red III” ©2021 Niki Gulley

30″ x 48″ Textured Mixed Media on Canvas

In this new series, I wanted to create pieces that are full of joy, energy, texture and light. Working on oversized canvases and painting the blossoms larger than life add to that feeling of hope and exuberance. Choosing to leave the background airy and working with thick layers of white on white paint, ribbons of brightly colored blooms dance across the canvas with spontaneity and freedom. Subconsciously, I feel like these light-filled visions came to me in response to so much bad news and the COVID lockdown. Searching for a way to create more space, room to roam and the freedom to live life to its fullest, I hope these paintings bring the beauty of nature inside and fill your spirit with light and cheer.

Palette Knife Artist Niki Gulley Painting Roses in Her Garden

20″ x 30″ Textured Mixed Media on Canvas • ©2021 Niki Gulley

As my garden kept evolving this spring, I was treated every day to a new blossoming surprise! After my irises were complete, I was greeted by the most gorgeous roses I’ve seen since I planted them 5 years ago. So, of course I had to go out and capture those beauties before they disappeared.

Wanting to create pieces that are full of joy, energy, texture and light, I painted the blooms large to add to that feeling of hope and exuberance. Choosing to leave the background airy and working with thick layers of white on white paint, multi-colored roses dance across the canvas with spontaneity and freedom. I hope these paintings bring the beauty of nature inside and fill your spirit with light and cheer.
