New “Gondola Ride II” Oil Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Gondola Ride II,” Venice ©2019 Niki Gulley
12″ x 9″ oil painting

I painted this piece on location during our Art Trek we taught in Venice while their infamous Carnival celebration was taking place. Since St. Mark’s Square can get overrun with tourists, we chose to set up our easels along a side street to enjoy the peacefulness and beauty of the city. I love the magical light that comes flooding in through the canals and is so distinctive of Venice. The simple brick bridge and the one yellow building in the distance sets a perfect backdrop to the gondolier rowing his enchanted passengers through the romantic back canals.

New Venice Palette Knife Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“First Ride of the Day,” Venice ©2019 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 10″ x 20″ textured oil painting
Just Sold! Painted on location in Venice, this morning I set up my easel along the lagoon to capture the iconic scenery and magical morning light. I love the silhouette of the lone gondola rowing its first passengers of the day through the canals. Working quickly to capture the light as it sparkles against the water, I created this piece with palette knife and a lot of oil paint so that it is filled with texture, color and movement.

New “Sunrise in St. Mark’s Square” Oil Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Sunrise in St. Mark’s Square” Venice ©2019 Niki Gulley
12″ x 16″ oil painting

I painted this piece on location in Venice during our Art Trek we taught in Venice while their infamous Carnival celebration was taking place. Since St. Mark’s Square can get overrun with tourists, we chose to get up with sunrise to enjoy the beauty of the city and the peacefulness of those early morning hours. I love the magical light that comes flooding in from the lagoon and is so distinctive of Venice. Fortunately, I got set up in time to capture the glow from the gas lamps, too, before they went out as daylight approached, adding to the mysterious quality of the plaza. Against a backdrop of the Doge’s Palace, a few people stroll across the square and signal the energy of the day that is to come.

New “Gondola Sunrise” by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Gondola Sunrise” Venice ©2019 Niki Gulley
10″ x 20″ textured oil painting

Rising before the crack of dawn to enjoy St. Mark’s Square before the mad rush during Carnivalé, I set up my easel along the lagoon to capture the iconic scenery and gorgeous sunrise. Luckily Mother Nature did not disappoint and the sky was filled with magical pinks, golds and oranges. I love the stack of gondolas resting along the shore just waiting to be taken out for ride. Working quickly to capture the light as it sparkles against the water, I created this piece with palette knife and a lot of oil paint so that it is filled with texture, color and movement.

Watching Sunset, Venice Art Trek with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

Venice Art Trek 2014
8″ x 12″ pastel by Niki Gulley
After we finished painting that morning, the photographers joined us for lunch when they were done shooting. We enjoyed a delicious pizza al fresco and afterwards the photographers kept shooting, the painters had some down time, and we reconnected late that afternoon to take the ferry across the canal to San Giorgio Island where a full masquerade of characters were gathered for sunset. We chose this quiet location looking back at Venice framed by the docked boats for our paintings. That night we dined on delicious seafood pasta, fresh fish and a delicious local red wine. A great first day!

New Venice Oil Painting by Niki Gulley

“Back Canals,” Venice ©2013 Niki Gulley
8″ x 10″ oil painting

On the last day of our Venice Art Trek, St. Mark’s Square was packed with tourists and people dressed up in costumes for Carnivalé which we loved seeing, but we were hoping to find a quieter spot to paint. So we left the photographers and headed back into the local neighborhoods where it was very peaceful and picturesque. I liked the ornamentation on this bridge and the way the light danced across the water making it shimmer.
If you’d like to join us in Venice for our next Art Trek during Carnival Feb. 22 – Mar. 1, please let me know. The registration deadline of Oct. 12th is quickly approaching! For more details, e-mail Niki Gulley or go to nikigulley.com/artreks.

So we left the photographers and headed back into the local neighborhoods where it was very peaceful and picturesque. I liked the ornamentation on this bridge and the way the light danced across the water and the under side of the structure.
