“Sunshine on My Mind” New Sunflower Painting by Niki Gulley

Just Sold! I saw these cheerful sunflowers planted in my neighborhood every time I got in my car to ran errands and they were so bright and colorful, I just had to paint them! So this week, I dragged my body out of bed at 5 a.m. to capture them at sunrise before our Texas heat reached 100 degrees. While not normally an early riser, it was well worth it to bask in their glory while I was painting. I hope you, too, can enjoy their sunshine and start your day with a smile.

I absolutely love it when I come across a whole field of wildflowers – there is something about the transformation of a single dainty flower into a dense explosion of color that inspires awe and delights your senses. I liked how these rows of poppies and rolling grasses created a gentle harmony, inviting you to wander into the distance, getting lost in the moment. Just sold through the Good Art Company Gallery! These two massive, gnarly trees seemed to rise out of nowhere amongst the rolling fields of Texas bluebonnets. I feel like they had a story to tell, and I needed to capture their enduring presence by making them the focus of my painting. Purposely choosing this elongated canvas gives their trunks and limbs plenty of room to express their legacy and emphasize their majesty. Exciting pops of color, energetic strokes and a touch of whimsy add to the joy of these ancestral beauties.

“Field of Dreams” Large Triptych Sunflower Painting by Niki Gulley

Field of Dreams is inspired from the beautiful sunflower fields we visited in Provence, France. The flowers seemed to stretch forever and the color explosion was out of this world! Back in my studio, I worked from a combination of photos, on-site sketches and memories. Painting the sunflowers full-sized in the foreground helps to bring them to life and hopefully transport you to this happy location. Including surprising pops of vivid reds and purples keeps your eye moving throughout the scene, seeing new things each time you look at it, and adds to the joyful feeling.

I find being immersed in nature can have such an uplifting effect, and I wanted to share that feeling with you in Woodland Adventure. I chose pure, intense reds and yellows contrasted against autumn greens to create a fall forest that vibrates with color and energy. I placed the vivid foliage in diagonal sweeping shapes to create a sense of movement, so that you can feel the wind gently rustling the leaves and causing them to dance on a beautiful fall day.

“Winding Water” from the Willow City Loop by Niki Gulley

Painted on location along the Willow City Loop in Fredericksburg, TX, I was drawn to this tranquil spot, especially as the day was getting hotter. When I started the scene, there were just a few shadows being cast from the trees on the right but they kept growing as I was painting! I liked the rhythm they were creating so I decided to include their patterns and go ahead and chase the light (which is a no no for plein air painters). But there’s always exceptions to the rules, right? I hope you enjoy this cool peaceful place as much as I did.
