What was I saying about not getting enough blue? Today, my friend and talented artist, Sheri Jones, and I decided to paint another beautiful blue craftsman home as part of the “Paint Historic Waxahachie.” But this time I wanted the emphasis on their gorgeous hollyhock garden! The flowers were such a beautiful shade of pale cream with the sun creating blush and golden accents. The homeowner was so welcoming and took such pride in her yard that I was really glad I chose this location, too. What a fun afternoon!

Continuing to “Paint Historic Waxahachie,” that afternoon we only had a little time left to paint in the day, so we chose to capture this blue home and beautiful yuccas planted in front of it. After painting so much pink, now I couldn’t get enough of painting blue! The contrast in the reds and azures were so fun and cheerful that I had to capture that uplifting pop of color.

SOLD • 12″ x 16” textured acrylic painting on canvas panel

Just sold! So, today I broke my earlier pattern in the “Paint Historic Waxahachie” contest and started painting blue. I just adored this azure blue craftsman home surrounded by its beautiful garden. The homeowner was so welcoming and took such pride in his yard, that I wanted to honor that in my painting. The rose trellis and dappled lit entry were so inviting, that I wanted to capture that feeling, almost like the setting was giving you a warm, welcoming hug.

Texas Artist Niki Gulley Paints Historic Waxahachie

“Pretty in Pink II” ©2023 Niki Gulley
8″ x 10” textured acrylic painting on canvas panel

Can you really get too much pink??? After painting my first blush Victorian home in Waxahachie the previous week, I just had to capture another one today. This 1800’s beauty was decorated in pink, pink, and more pink! So whimsical and fun, I just had to feature these kitschy flamingos and all of the rosy glory surrounding them.

For a brand new challenge this spring, I registered for Paint Historic Waxahachie, a plein air painting competition hosted in the town of Waxahachie about an hour south of Dallas. Basically, over the course of a few weeks, our assignment was to complete paintings on location anywhere in the city limits. Filled with beautiful historic homes, I was attracted to the detailed craftsmanship and architecture. Each homeowner had taken great care in decorating their porches and yards to create a warm welcome, and I wanted to capture that beauty and pride in my paintings.

For a brand new challenge this spring, I registered for Paint Historic Waxahachie, a plein air painting competition hosted in the town of Waxahachie about an hour south of Dallas. Basically, over the course of a few weeks, our assignment was to complete paintings on location anywhere in the city limits. Filled with beautiful homes built in the late 1800s, I was attracted to the detailed craftsmanship and historic architecture. Each homeowner had taken great care in decorating their porches and yards to create a warm welcome, and I wanted to capture that beauty and pride in my paintings.

Here you can see this beautiful pink Victorian surrounded by more beautiful rose and scarlet blooms. I loved the play of complimentary colors, even down to the green detailing and scrollwork on the house.

Texas Artist Niki Gulley Painting Spring Wildflowers

“Spring’s Brushstrokes” ©2023 Niki Gulley
12″ x 12” textured acrylic painting on canvas panel

This spring I was invited to paint on this beautiful ranch south of Dallas. I loved the contrast of the red barn doors against the sea of blue wildflowers and the azure skies above. Full of texture and character, I wanted to capture its essence on that beautiful spring day. While the air was still crisp, the sun was warming the ground, causing the foreground to glow and welcoming in spring.

New Bluebonnet Painting from the Texas Hill Country by Niki Gulley

“Spring’s Brushstrokes II,” Texas Hill Country ©2023 Niki Gulley
20″ x 10″ textured acrylic painting on canvas

I painted these Texas bluebonnets and Indian Paintbrush on location with extremely thick paint and palette knives to achieve depth and texture. It turns out the barn was built by the homeowner, and I was so taken with its beautiful craftsmanship. I chose a vertical composition so that the wildflowers in the foreground would draw your eye straight to its character and status. Leaving out extraneous background details also reinforces that feeling.

The resulting image comes to life and is loaded with color and energy. In this wildflower series, I’ve painted the edges of the 1 and 1/2 inch deep stretcher bars with the scene continuing around the sides so that it can be hung without a frame, or I have the option of an espresso floater frame which draws your attention into the painting.

Painting Poppy Fields in Tuscany with Niki Gulley

“Ruby Expanse II” ©2023 Niki Gulley
12″ x 16″ textured acrylic painting on canvas panel

This beautiful poppy scene was inspired by the view out our window in Tuscany! The vibrant red carpet filled fields lifted our spirits every time we gazed outside, and I had to paint this one from our room. Cypress trees framed the scene and the constantly changing light cast dramatic shadows on the distant mountains and villa while billowing clouds drifted by. I hope this one transports you to this happy place and takes all of your worries with it!

New Tuscany Poppy Field Painting by Palette Knife Artist Niki Gulley

“Ruby Expanse” ©2023 Niki Gulley
10″ x 20″ textured acrylic painting on canvas panel

Before we started teaching in Provence, we first took a direct flight to Rome and explored more of Tuscany for a few days before we flew onto France. Remembering from the past that May is usually a perfect time to find poppy fields, we thought we’d find the ruby beauties everywhere. Wrong! Thus began our crazy quest in search of the elusive poppy. And, after a week of scouring the countryside, we finally found them! Of course, they were right next to our b and b, but in a direction we hadn’t explored all week.

But, once we did finally discover them, the vibrant pops of red just lifted my spirits. Combined with gorgeous skies and dramatic lighting, it was truly inspiring and so much fun to paint after 2 solid rainy days. Hope you can feel and experience all of that joy, too!

New “Radiating Aromas” Lavender Field Painting by Niki Gulley

“Radiating Aromas” ©2023 Niki Gulley

16” x 20” textured acrylic painting on canvas panel

The lavender fields in Provence are incredible – perfectly manicured rows and rows of an explosion of violet as far as the eye can see. Rippling purple rows draw your eye to the lone stone farmhouse in the distance while clouds drift by also in rhythmic waves, creating a flowing harmony. Perspective lines converge, leading you to this joyful spot and I hope you can smell the amazing aromas and feel your spirits lifted while gazing into this scene!
