Painted on location in Glen Rose, Texas with the company of my Outdoor Painters Society, I chose to paint the oldest house in town. It was so full of character and charm and I loved the big huge front porch and white-washed picket fence. The pergola welcomes you to step right in and relax on a rocking chair, visiting with neighbors and loved ones. Dramatic lighting and shadows add to the warmth of the moment.

In this painting I wanted to create a dream-like feel using one of my favorite flowers, the poppy. There is something awe-inspiring about the transformation of a single dainty flower into a dense explosion of vibrant, energetic crimson that delights your senses and lifts your spirits. Arranging the wildflower masses in the foreground to create waves of color and repeating those curving shapes throughout the landscape add to a sense of joyful harmony and tranquility.

I wanted to capture the rhythm, color, and joy of prolific poppies flowing along this blossoming hillside. Set beneath a colorful sky with a few clouds drifting by on a beautiful day in springtime, wildflowers are in full bloom. Making sure to not over blend my thick strokes so that you could see the marks and feel the energy found in nature, Blossoming Joy is loaded with texture, vibrant hues and movement. Vertical diagonal rows of ruby jewel tones lead your eye into the distance, inviting you to stroll amongst the gorgeous tapestry. Painted on location, I set up my easel in front of these prolific azalea bushes along Turtle Creek near my home. The vibrant pinks and fuchsia were so full of life set against the cool green leaves, that I wanted to capture not only that vivid spring color but also the elegant sycamore tree in the distance with its speckled white bark. Contrasting the height of the vertical tree against the horizontal blooms, I chose this vertical panoramic canvas, and repeating shapes throughout creates a harmony to the overall scene. Painted with palette knife and lots of texture, I hope you can feel the beauty and energy of a perfect spring day.

I absolutely love it when I come across a whole field of wildflowers – there is something about the transformation of a single dainty flower into a dense explosion of color that inspires awe and delights your senses. “Winding Water” from the Willow City Loop by Niki Gulley

Painted on location along the Willow City Loop in Fredericksburg, TX, I was drawn to this tranquil spot, especially as the day was getting hotter. When I started the scene, there were just a few shadows being cast from the trees on the right but they kept growing as I was painting! I liked the rhythm they were creating so I decided to include their patterns and go ahead and chase the light (which is a no no for plein air painters). But there’s always exceptions to the rules, right? I hope you enjoy this cool peaceful place as much as I did.

This sunflower field that I visited this summer was GORGEOUS. It felt like it stretched for miles. Bright, happy faces sharing their smiles with us and lifting our spirits. My heart literally swelled and I had to capture all of that joy on canvas. Utilizing vivid, uplifting hues, thick paint and bold, loose strokes add to the happy, carefree feeling of the moment and I hope you are transported there with me.

“Weathered Cisterns” Palette Knife Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

18″ x 12″ textured oil painting • Grapevine, TX

I painted these water tanks and grain mill in the distance recently in Grapevine, TX on a bright, crisp winter morning. I loved the colorful rust contrasting against the blue-grays of the metal containers, and I worked with thick layers of oil paint and my palette knife to capture that texture. The whole scene had an industrial feel to it, so I chose to include the telephone pole and wires in the foreground to set that feel and also lead you into the scene. Adding a touch of whimsy to an otherwise hardened scene, I like the play of recent man made touches juxtaposed against 19th and 20th century modern technology.

“Flowing into Spring” Palette Knife Painting by Dallas Artist Niki Gulley

Just Sold! I painted this scene from the Dallas Arboretum on location when the weather was beautiful and the spring buds were in full bloom. I love tulips being one of the first flowers to announce that winter has officially ended, so I focused on these colorful red and white striped ones in the foreground, which contrast so well against the complimentary green leaves and grasses. I also liked how their height leads you back into the distant flower beds and onto the Degolyer house in the background, so I chose this vertical panorama format to accentuate that feeling. Loaded with thick oil paint, texture and movement, I hope you can feel the joy that spring is in the air!
