New “Misty Morning” in Tuscany by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

August 5, 2019
“Misty Morning,” Tuscany ©2019 Niki Gulley
16″ x 20″ textured oil painting

On this morning in Tuscany, we decided to get up really early so that we could capture sunrise over this beautiful valley. The hills were surrounded by a layer of mist that created this ethereal, peaceful quality to the morning. I really liked how the fog accentuated the miles and miles of rolling landscape, perfectly off-setting the villa surrounded by cypress and olive groves in the foreground. While I’m not usually an early morning person, this turned out to be a very inspiring moment!

“Harmonic Hues” Aspen Tree Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

August 1, 2019
“Harmonic Hues” ©2019 Niki Gulley
36″ x 36″ texture oil painting

I love painting aspen trees and I usually work with a more primary color palette, but in this painting, I wanted to convey a quieter, more peaceful mood. Opting for calming grey greens, teals and soft golds, with hints of pumpkin and crimson to bring pops of joy and energy. Harmonic Hues reminds me of the serenity I feel while walking through the forest on a cool autumn day, being totally immersed in nature, not a care in the world. I hope you are transported, too!

“Marching into Autumn II” Palette Knife Aspen Tree Painting by Niki Gulley

July 31, 2019
“Marching into Autumn II” ©2019 Niki Gulley
12″ x 24″ textured oil on canvas

I loved this brilliant aspen forest with its bright white aspen trunks slicing through all of the vibrant red and yellow foliage, contrasted against the multitude of greens surrounding it. The patterns of the trees created a sort of rhythm and I focused on the placement of the ivory sentinels and strokes in the leaves to add to that feeling of a driving beat. I hope you, too, can feel the energy and joy of being surrounded by nature as autumn is in full swing.

“Autumn Concerto II” by Niki Gulley Available at Seaside Gallery

July 30, 2019
“Autumn Concerto II” ©2018 Niki Gulley
16″ x 20″ textured oil painting

I painted these colorful birch trees on location with the fall hues emerging in all of their glory. I loved this grove of trunks that twisted and turned, slicing bright white through the tangle of autumn leaves. Painted over several mornings, the air was crisp but the sun made for beautiful painting conditions that illuminated the subject and warmed the air. I hope you, too, can feel the thrill of being surrounded by nature on a perfect fall day.

New “Aspiring Dreams” Fall Foliage Treetops by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

July 29, 2019
“Aspiring Dreams”  ©2019 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 20″ x 16″ textured oil painting

Just sold! Painted on location, I was drawn to the striking reds and oranges of the maple treetops contrasted against the vivid turquoise blue sky. There was so much energy in the colors and the breeze blowing through the leaves, that I had to capture that feeling. Dappled light rakes across the tree trunks and illuminates flickering leaves as they catch the sunlight. Using diagonal strokes and a lot of paint with my palette knife, this piece is filled with joy, color and movement.

“Cross Hatch” Palette Knife Aspen Tree Painting by Niki Gulley

July 26, 2019
“Cross Hatch”
SOLD • 12″ x 18″ textured oil by Niki Gulley

Just Sold! Recently, we visited Santa Fe and to escape the heat we ventured up the Santo de Cristo mountains to cool down amongst the beautiful, refreshing aspen trees. I was attracted to this grouping of trunks in particular with their beautiful textured white bark and their proximity and angles to each other. Their verticality offset by the horizontal logs on the ground made for an interesting composition. On this piece, I decided to pull in tight on the trunks, really focusing on the peeling bark and gnarled knots. I chose to include just a sliver of the sentinels behind to give you a sense of being surrounded by the peaceful forest and accentuating the rhythm in the upright trunks. Pops of red add to the joy and energy of the moment. I hope you, too, can feel the serenity of this rejuvenating place.

In this painting, I wanted you to you to experience the joy of looking up into the treetops – just like you did when you were a kid. Lying on the ground, not a care in the world, you gaze in wonderment as the clouds drift by. Choosing warm yellows, reds and greens and utilizing thick chunky staccato strokes add to that childlike whimsy and I hope you are transported back to a happy, carefree time and place.

Last Day, Provence Art Trek with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

“Cascading Roses” ©2019 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 9″ x 12″ textured oil painting by Niki Gulley

Day 6, Provence Art Trek:
Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop
with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

Just Sold! On the last day of our Provence Art Trek, we decided to stay right at our b and b to paint since it was so beautiful. Meanwhile the photographers explored the nearby area and others just relaxed by the pool. Choosing what to paint was a challenge since the grounds are so picturesque. Myself and another painter set up our easels by this lovely courtyard, with this stately tree surrounded by cascading roses, while another chose to paint lavender lined walkway and another set up by the ancient Roman bridge on the back of the property. It was a gorgeous morning and everyone’s paintings turned out great!

That evening we gathered for a final critique and “show and tell” from the trip. The photographers presented their best images in a slide show and provided us with happy memories from the trip, while opening our eyes to creative possibilities we never considered. The painters showed off their talented creations from each day of the trip and swapped ideas of which aspects they liked best.

For dinner that night, we gathered for one more delicious meal of escargot, filet crusted in mushrooms and chocolate volcano cake washed down with some amazing red wine. Having formed new friendships and enjoyed wonderful memories from the trip, our Provence Art Trek had come to a bittersweet end.

New “Bundle of Sunshine” Sunflower Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

July 23, 2019
“Bundle of Sunshine” ©2019 Niki Gulley
24″ x 12″ textured oil painting on wrap around canvas, framed in an espresso floater frame

I was awestruck by these massive fields of sunflowers blooming in Provence. Seeing this brilliant carpet of gold, with its sea of faces smiling towards the sun, just made me feel happy and I wanted you to experience that joy, too. Exaggerating the tile-roofed house in the distance also adds to that cheerful, whimsical mood of feeling content and like you’ve found your home. Created with palette knife and oil paint, “Bundle of Sunshine” practically leaps off the canvas and comes to life with its vibrant yellow petals and extremely thick three-dimensional oil paint.

“Bundle of Sunshine” along with several of my contemporary impressionistic landscape paintings are available through my gallery, the Good Art Company, in Fredericksburg, TX at goodartcompany.com/gacart/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=25&sort=20a&page=1&z.
