“Rhapsody in Bloom II” Palette Knife Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Rhapsody in Bloom II” ©2019 Niki Gulley
20″ x 20″ textured oil painting

I painted these cheerful tulips from life in my backyard garden. With all of our rain this year, I had a bumper crop and wanted to capture the joy I felt seeing them signaling that winter was finally over and spring had begun! Created with palette knife and thick paint, this piece is bursting with color and texture. Blurring out the background, you can focus on each individual flower. Creating a circular composition within the square format creates a harmony and flow, while unblended diagonal marks add to the energy and happiness of the moment. I hope these tulips brighten your day and lift your spirits, too.

New “Springtime at White Rock Lake” Bluebonnet Oil Painting by Niki Gulley

“Springtime at White Rock Lake” ©2019 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 14″ x 18″ textured oil painting

Just Sold! This might have been one of the best years for the bluebonnets and wildflowers in Texas, including Dallas where we don’t usually see many! The explosion of color along roadsides was incredible. I found this prolific patch of bluebonnets and Indian Paintbrush just down from my house at White Rock Lake, and I had to capture all of those beautiful blooms before they were gone. This morning started out slightly overcast, and the sun kept peeking in and out of the clouds, creating a soft glow to everything it touched. I wanted to capture that magical light illuminating the lake and accentuating the rows of wildflowers along the hill. It was such a peaceful spot that I wanted that emotion to come through, too. I hope you can feel the joy and tranquility of springtime with the wildflowers abloom in the Texas!

16″ x 20″ textured oil painting

I painted “Texas Trails” this spring while visiting Austin and the surrounding area. This might have been one of the best years for the bluebonnets and wildflowers. The explosion of color along roadsides was incredible! This morning started out slightly overcast, and the sun kept peeking in and out of the clouds, creating a soft glow to everything it touched. I wanted to capture that magical light illuminating your journey on this Texas walking trail lined by bluebonnets and Indian paintbrush. I hope you, too, can feel the excitement of springtime with the wildflowers abloom in the Texas Hill Country!

New “Waves of Wildflowers” Texas Bluebonnet Painting by Niki Gulley

“Waves of Wildflowers” ©2019 Niki Gulley
25.5″ x 12.5″ textured oil painting

I wanted to capture the rhythm, color, and density of our bluebonnets and vibrant wildflowers flowing along the grassy rises and falls of the berms so indicative of the Texas Hill Country. Making sure not to over blend my thick strokes so that you could see the marks and feel the energy found in nature, Waves of Wildflowers is loaded with texture, color and movement. Dramatic clouds set the backdrop while vertical curving rows of cobalt and crimson lead your eye to the house tucked into the distant foliage, welcoming you home. Arranging the bluebonnets and Indian Paintbrush vertically are designed to lift your spirits and add joy to your home.

“Tapestry of Colors” ©2019 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 30″ x 40″ textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

Just Sold through the Good Art Company Gallery! In this painting, I wanted to capture the rhythm, color, and density of our bluebonnets, Indian Paintbrush and vibrant wildflowers flowing along the grassy rises and falls of our berms in the Texas Hill Country. Making sure not to over blend my thick strokes so that you could see the marks and feel the energy found in nature. Repeating patterns and waves of color create a harmony within the painting, while rendering the blooms slightly abstract plays with taking a traditional subject matter and showing it in a contemporary way.

“Rooted Together” Palette Knife Poppy Painting by Niki Gulley

“Rooted Together” ©2019 Niki Gulley
24″ x 12″ textured oil painting on wrap around canvas, framed in an espresso floater frame

Rooted Together was inspired from a trip we took to Monet’s Gardens outside of Paris. Being a lover of impressionist paintings, I was awestruck standing in the footsteps of one of my favorite painters! The gardens have been maintained immacuately and I could see exactly where he painted his paintings. I’ve always loved påurple irises and was particularly drawn to this view, with the irises large in the foreground and all of the colorful blooms leading up to his house behind them. Painted with thick oil paint and palette knife, this canvas is loaded with texture, surprising pops of color and energy.“Rooted Together” along with several of my contemporary impressionistic landscape paintings are available through my gallery, the Good Art Company, in Fredericksburg, TX at goodartcompany.com/gacart/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=25&sort=20a&page=1&z.

New “Bundle of Sunshine” Sunflower Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

“Bundle of Sunshine” ©2019 Niki Gulley
24″ x 12″ textured oil painting on wrap around canvas, framed in an espresso floater frame

I was awestruck by these massive fields of sunflowers blooming in Provence. Seeing this brilliant carpet of gold, with its sea of faces smiling towards the sun, just made me feel happy and I wanted you to experience that joy, too. Exagerating the tile-roofed house in the distance also adds to that cheerful, whimsical mood of feeling content and like you’ve found your home. Created with palette knife and oil paint, “Bundle of Sunshine” practically leaps off the canvas and comes to life with its vibrant yellow petals and extremely thick three-dimensional oil paint.

“Flowing into Spring” Palette Knife Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Flowing into Spring” ©2019 Niki Gulley
24″ x 12″ textured oil painting on wrap around canvas, framed in an espresso floater frame

I painted this scene from the Dallas Arboretum on location a few weeks ago when the weather was beautiful and the spring buds were in full bloom. I love tulips being one of the first flowers to announce that winter has officially ended, so I focused on these colorful red and white striped ones in the foreground, which contrast so well against the complimentary green leaves and grasses. I also liked how their height leads you back into the distant flower beds and onto the Degolyer house in the background, so I chose this vertical panorama format to accentuate that feeling. Loaded with thick oil paint, texture and movement, I hope you can feel the joy that spring is in the air!“Flowing into Spring” along with several of my contemporary impressionistic landscape paintings are available through my gallery, the Good Art Company, in Fredericksburg, TX at goodartcompany.com/gacart/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=25&sort=20a&page=1&z.

“Visions of Azaleas” Palette Knife Oil Painting by Niki Gulley

“Visions of Azaleas” ©2019 Niki Gulley
24″ x 12″ textured oil painting on wrap around canvas, framed in an espresso floater frame

Painted on location, I set up my easel in front of these prolific azalea bushes along Turtle Creek near my home. The vibrant pinks and fuchsia were so full of life set against the cool green leaves, that I wanted to capture not only that vivid spring color but also the elegant sycamore tree in the distance with its speckled white bark.  Contrasting the height of the vertical tree against the horizontal blooms, I chose this vertical panoramic canvas, and repeating shapes throughout creates a harmony to the overall scene. Painted with palette knife and lots of texture, I hope you can feel the beauty and energy of a perfect spring day.

“Visions of Wildflowers II” Palette Knife Bluebonnet Oil Painting by Niki Gulley

“Visions of Wildflowers II” ©2018 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 36″ x 36″ textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

Just sold! In this Texas wildflower series, I wanted to capture the excitement and energy felt during a beautiful April day when the bluebonnets are painting the horizon in blue. Driving through the hill country in springtime, there is such an amazing explosion of color from the bluebonnets, Indian paintbrush, coreopsis and the plethora of wildflowers, that it fills your heart with joy and awe. Focusing on the rows of color versus a traditional landscape scene, I felt like I could communicate more of the emotion felt being surrounded by all of this Texas beauty. For more information on “Visions of Wildflowers” series, please contact my gallery, the Good Art Company, in Fredericksburg, TX at goodartcompany.com/gacart/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=25&sort=20a&page=1&z.
