Day 6:  Ireland ART TREK
Afternoon location: Dingle Peninsula and Killarney Castle
Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams
 
On
the 6th afternoon of Ireland Art Trek, we continued to paint on the
castle grounds while the photographers and tourists finished exploring
the Dingle Peninsula. I chose to paint the castle’s guest house because I
love how it was nestled back in the woods, feeling so nostalgic of a
visit to grandma’s in the country. The massive unusual pine trees were
so awe-inspiring that I used them to frame the right half of the scene,
leading your eye down the path to the yellow house safely tucked in
among the lush foliage. A soft light would appear off and on,
illuminating the scene and creating that unique Irish light. That
evening we all reconnected and dined again on another delicious dinner
in town.

New “Simple Life IV” Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

My
husband and I were on a road trip when we came across a couple of these
white house glowing on the horizon. Set among vibrant green gently
rolling hills with the intense blue ocean in the distance, something
beckoned us to stop. Maybe it was the quiet beauty of the scene, or the
nostalgic tug at a simpler life, but we were both moved to capture the
moment. To convey that feeling of a less congested life, I accentuated
the the basic shapes of the homes against the simple repetive curves of
the hills. Meanwhile a few wispy clouds drift by adding to the
tranquility of the moment. I hope you are transported to this memory of
our past, before modern life got so complicated.

My

After
we finished teaching our Art Trek to Vermont, my husband and I stayed
another few days to try to capture the gorgeous scenery on canvas and
film. This morning, we ventured up to the majestic overlook by the Von
Trapp property to capture the spectacular scenery. I loved how this
cabin was perfectly tucked into the mountainside surrounded by vibrant
fall foliage. The slightly overcast day made the colors pop even more! I
hope you, too, can enjoy the crisp autumn air and a peaceful escape
from the bustle of city life.

Just Sold!  During our Tuscany Foodie Trek that my husband and I led, we headed to the wine town of Montalcino. I set up my easel at this gorgeous vineyard with its colorful grapevines turning beautiful oranges and golds with the cooling fall temperatures. Capturing the rows and rows of grapes hugging the hills and leading you back to the villa perched in the distance, I hope you can taste the delicious wine and escape to Tuscany with me!

New “Oldest House in Glen Rose” by Palette Knife Artist Niki Gulley

Painted on location in Glen Rose, Texas with the company of my Outdoor Painters Society, I chose to paint the oldest house in town. It was so full of character and charm and I loved the big huge front porch and white-washed picket fence. The pergola welcomes you to step right in and relax on a rocking chair, visiting with neighbors and loved ones. Dramatic lighting and shadows add to the warmth of the moment.

“Weathered Cisterns” Palette Knife Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

I painted these water tanks and grain mill in the distance recently in Grapevine, TX on a bright, crisp winter morning. I loved the colorful rust contrasting against the blue-grays of the metal containers, and I worked with thick layers of oil paint and my palette knife to capture that texture. The whole scene had an industrial feel to it, so I chose to include the telephone pole and wires in the foreground to set that feel and also lead you into the scene. Adding a touch of whimsy to an otherwise hardened scene, I like the play of recent man made touches juxtaposed against 19th and 20th century modern technology.

New Rooftop Overlook from Tuscany by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

Just Sold!  During our Tuscany Foodie Trek, we headed to the wine town of Montepulciano. Perched atop a giant hill with beautiful views of the surrounding vineyards below, I set up my easel at this breathtaking overlook while the rest of our group visited wineries or took a cooking class with a local chef at a nearby award-winning restaurant. The view of the valley below is gorgeous with miles of olive groves and vineyards stretching to the horizon. I chose to paint the this puzzle of rooftops and buildings stacked in the foreground with the lush valley stretching to infinity in the distance.  I hope you enjoy the morning escape to Tuscany!
 
After lunch, we visited a winery nearby to sample their Rossos, Vino Nobiles and the delicious sweet dessert wine, Vin Santo. Full from the local meats and cheeses and tasty red wines, we headed back to the villa for a quiet night of relaxing and soaking in the evening scenery.

I created “Nature’s Ascension” on a beautiful day last fall at one of my favorite painting spots near our home. I was attracted to the colorful dappled light raking across these steps and hillside, beckoning you to ascend. Meanwhile this majestic sycamore stands tall in its fall glory, also inviting you into the distance to discover what’s beyond. Painted with palette knife and thick oil paint, this landscape is filled with color, movement and energy!

During our New England Fall Foliage Art Trek that my husband, Scott Williams, and I taught, we painted this gorgeous valley in Stowe, VT with its iconic church nestled among the vibrant foliage. Painted with palette knife and oil paint, this canvas is loaded with textured, color and movement!
