Iceland Art Trek: Day 1 – Skogafoss

First stop on our Iceland Art Trek this year was the Skogafoss waterfall. Surrounded by lush grassy mountains, this cascade surges downward with such force and power! Today I set up my easel to capture the energy and flow of the water. Creating strokes in diagonal sweeping shapes to enhance that feeling of movement and rhythm, I hope you, too, can hear the flowing water’s music and feel the gentle spray from its mist.

Inspired from a wonderful trip to Tuscany, I wanted this piece to be uplifting and full of joy and energy. Set beneath a colorful sky with a few clouds drifting by on a beautiful day in springtime, the poppies and wildflowers are in full bloom. Using broken impressionistic strokes in surprising hues, causes the landscape to dance and flow, and I hope all of your cares drift away while gazing into this cheerful scene.

Making sure to not over blend my thick strokes so that you could see the marks and feel the energy found in nature, Popping Color is loaded with texture, color and movement. I absolutely love it when I come across a whole field of wildflowers – there is something about the transformation of a single dainty flower into a dense explosion of color that inspires awe and delights your senses. I liked how these rows of poppies and rolling grasses created a gentle harmony, inviting you to wander into the distance, getting lost in the moment. Just Sold! During our New England Fall Foliage Art Trek, we headed to the top of Stowe Mountain to explore. The painters set out to capture this gorgeous forest ablaze with color. I loved the split rail fence lining the walkway. Meanwhile, the photographers and tourists ventured on foot through the forest and then continued to explore by car the surrounding area, picking us up for lunch on their return. 
 
That afternoon we visited local cheese and cider companies tasting Vermont’s treats. In the evening we enjoyed viewing everyone’s paintings and watching the photographers’ slide shows from the week. Afterwards we delighted in one last dinner together. A great treat with new friends after a fun-filled day!

Enjoying the melodic tinkling of the aspen leaves rustling in the breeze, the trickling sounds of the babbling brook at our side, and the beauty of fall ablaze with color, I felt invigorated as I began painting this aspen forest. The setting was so peaceful and rejuvenating that I wanted to communicate that joyful feeling of discovery. Filling the canvas with energetic staccato strokes and bold colors, in addition to gently arching the tree trunks reaching towards the sky, add to that uplifting feeling. And then just a sliver of the trail cutting through the forest, suggests the excitement of the journey that is to come.

This painting is inspired from my first trip to Colorado. I loved the majestic mountains, the meandering creeks and rushing rivers, the lush terrain and the quaking aspen trees. The ride through the mountains was thrilling, as we straddled cliff sides, our tires gripped the road through spine-tingling hairpin turns, we raced through cavernous tunnels carved through the dense rock, and jagged mountains hugged us like there was no tomorrow. And, as if the journey wasn’t exciting enough, we were reminded of the  adventure that lay ahead with a new falling rocks sign every few bends!

Just Sold! This sunflower field that I visited this summer was GORGEOUS. It felt like it stretched for miles. Bright, happy faces sharing their smiles with us and lifting our spirits. My heart literally swelled and I had to capture all of that joy on canvas.  Utilizing vivid, uplifting hues, thick paint and bold, loose strokes add to the happy, carefree feeling of the moment and I hope you are transported there with me.

On our drive through Ennis this spring, the bluebonnets were so full and thick along Sugar Bush ridge. So, I set up my easel to capture this beautiful, peaceful view. I loved how the undulating rows of the clouds, treetops along the hills and wildflowers in the foreground all repeated similar shapes and wave-like patterns adding to the feeling of symmetry and serenity. I hope you, too, can feel the joy and glory of springtime in Texas!
