My husband and I recently visited the Amalfi Coast of Italy and were awestruck by its beauty. Since it hugs the coast, there are gorgeous views around every turn of the colorful houses and rooftops overlooking the tranquil blue harbor. With this amazing view out our hotel window, I decided I had to paint it one day! Loaded with color and texture, I hope my painting transports you to this idyllic location and brings back wonderful vacation memories.

With this amazing view on our walk into town every day with its iconic tiled church, I decided I had to stop and paint it! Loaded with color and texture, I hope my painting transports you to this idyllic location and brings back wonderful vacation memories.

New “Simple Life IV” Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

My husband and I were on a road trip when we came across a couple of these white house glowing on the horizon. Set among vibrant green gently rolling hills with the intense blue ocean in the distance, something beckoned us to stop. Maybe it was the quiet beauty of the scene, or the nostalgic tug at a simpler life, but we were both moved to capture the moment. To convey that feeling of a less congested life, I accentuated the the basic shapes of the homes against the simple repetive curves of the hills. Meanwhile a few wispy clouds drift by adding to the tranquility of the moment. I hope you are transported to this memory of our past, before modern life got so complicated.

In this painting I wanted to create a dream-like feel using one of my favorite flowers, the poppy. There is something awe-inspiring about the transformation of a single dainty flower into a dense explosion of vibrant, energetic crimson that delights your senses and lifts your spirits. Arranging the wildflower masses in the foreground to create waves of color and repeating those curving shapes throughout the landscape add to a sense of joyful harmony and tranquility.

Vertical diagonal rows of ruby jewel tones lead your eye to the foliage in the distance, inviting you to stroll amongst the gorgeous wildflowers. I wanted to show Texas’ spring landscape in a completely different way. Making sure not to over blend my thick strokes so that you could see the marks and feel the energy found in nature. Repeating patterns and waves of color create a harmony within the painting, while rendering the bluebonnets and wildflowers along with their surroundings abstractly plays with taking a traditional subject matter and showing it in a contemporary way. With an aura of mystery, late day light touches the tops of the grasses and hills with glimmers of hope.
