New Autumn Aspen Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Painted Forest” ©2021 Niki Gulley
18″ x 24″ textured mixed media painting
on 1.5″ wrap around canvas with the painting continuing around the edges
I loved this brilliant aspen forest with its bright white aspen trunks slicing through all of the vibrant red and yellow foliage. The patterns of the trees created a sort of rhythm and I focused on the placement of the ivory sentinels, the diagonal purple shadows that they cast and the rustling of the leaves to add to that musical feeling. I hope you, too, can sense the energy and joy of being surrounded by nature as autumn is in full swing.

Inspired by a recent trip, we were greeted by this gorgeous view of the rolling landscape. Rhythmic waves in the sky and along the hillsides create a harmonious scene that flows with light, texture and color.

New “Three’s Company” Aspen Painting by Palette Knife Artist Niki Gulley

“Three’s Company” ©2021 Niki Gulley

20″ x 16″ textured oil painting on canvas panel

This summer we visited Santa Fe and to escape the heat we ventured up the Santo de Cristo mountains to cool down amongst the beautiful, refreshing aspen trees. In this painting I wanted you to feel that child-like wonder of staring up in into the treetops and the heavens above. Choosing calming greens against a lavender-blue peaceful sky and arranging the aspens so that they meet in the middle, suggests a feeling of togetherness. While organizing the outlying trees and mesmerizing clouds in a circular pattern and using thick, curving brushstrokes, creates a joyful, playful mood.

New “Enchanted Tunnel” Oil Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

16″ x 20″ textured oil painting on canvas panel

I painted this colorful tree-lined lane on location because I was attracted to the play of light and shadows, and the way the trunks lined up beckoning you down their dappled path. Sunlight bathes the adobe walls filling them with warmth and illuminating the end of your journey. Splashes of color break through the dense canopy above and create shadows that dance with energy and mystery. Utilizing thick paint and palette knife, I also created a lot of texture and movement with my strokes to add to the joyful feeling of painting on this beautiful morning.

“Mountains of Color” Palette Knife New Mexico Cacti Painting by Niki Gulley

“Mountains of Color” ©2021 Niki Gulley
20″ x 10″ textured oil painting on canvas
We came across these blossoming cane cholla near Echo Canyon in New Mexico and I was so inspired by their beauty. What a gift from mother nature – not only were the cacti surviving but thriving in the desert climate and yielding such intensely colored fuchsia blooms. Set beneath the craggy mountains and turquoise blue sky, I hope these blossoms lift your spirits and bring the joy of New Mexico’s beauty into your home.

New “Mountains of Color II” Desert Sunflowers by Niki Gulley

“Mountains of Color II” ©2021 Niki Gulley
20″ x 10″ textured oil painting on canvas

On a recent trip to New Mexico, we headed towards Ghost Ranch and came across these wild sunflowers blooming alongside the road. Spreading their sunshine and reaching tall towards the light, their smiling faces filled me with cheer and I just had to paint them. Set beneath a cumulus filled sky and the mountainous backdrop, I arranged this composition vertically to add to the uplifting feeling that the sunflowers elicited.

Portugal Art Trek:
Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop led by Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

Day 4 – Evening Boat Ride

After returning from Obidos, we treated ourselves to a relaxing boat cruise along Cascais’ rocky shoreline and surrounding cities. Mother nature didn’t disappoint and we were able to enjoy a gorgeous sunset as we sipped on some local Portuguese wines!

Above you’ll see my interpretation of the coastline. I wanted this painting to be about the power of the ocean to lift your spirits. I also wanted to capture the gorgeous rock formations and the beautiful colors in the ocean. Whenever I visit the coastline I always feel rejuvenated, and I hope I’ve translated that onto the canvas for you to experience it, too.
