New Contemporary Wildflower Painting by Palette Knife Artist Niki Gulley

“Delightful Anticipation” ©2026 Niki Gulley
60″ x 30″” textured acrylic painting on wrap around canvas

Moving through the fear of starting a new large project – so exciting and yet intimidating! To help me paint more from my soul and less from my head, I first created an abstract “mess” of color. Then, allowing the canvas to guide me to tell its story and where to place my strokes and colors, the fun began. Truly exhilarating and just a little scary letting go of all control, like magic the landscape starts to emerge. I relish that freedom just playing and the aha moment where you feel everything coming together. After days, weeks, and even months of building layer upon layer of thick, textured paint, your subconscious vision comes to life. The canvas dances with color, sings with energy and my heart feels full. That’s when I know it is complete and I can’t wait to share that with you so you can get lost in the joy of luscious paint and nature’s beauty, too! Filled with so many layers and surprising pops of color all over the canvas, you’ll never get bored looking into “Delightful Anticipation” as there is always something new to discover.

Painting Iceland’s Gorgeous Coastline in Palette Knife by Niki Gulley

“Floating Contemplation” 10″ x 20″  textured acrylic painting on panel by Niki Gulley

Every day when we left our Iceland hotel to explore the country’s other worldly scenery, we would pass this house situated next to the ocean. Nestled between the Atlantic and inland estuaries, I could just imagine what the idyllic views would be like staying there. So today we stopped so I could capture this serene escape, and bring you along with us.

Strolling through a birch forest painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Woodland Stroll” ©2026 Niki Gulley
10″ x 20” textured oil painting

Today we continued our counterclockwise adventure around Iceland to arrive in the north, near the massive, impressive Godafoss waterfall. Unfortunately, our weather turned for the worse, and it was way too wet to paint the falls. However, just over the mountain, 20 minutes away at our b and b, the skies were fairly clear with even occasional glimpses of sunshine. I loved these birch trees all over their property, leading you down to the gorgeous view of the mountains in the distance. Sprinkled with summer wildflowers, I set out to capture the light casting long shadows from the trunks and causing the grasses to glow in the foreground, leading to a feeling of joy and serenity in this beautiful spot.

Textured Bluebonnet and Texas Wildflower Paintings by Palette Knife Artist Niki Gulley

“Petal Poetry X”
11″ x 16″ sculpted, highly textured acrylic painting on panel

With such a rich kaleidoscope of hues from the Texas wildflowers, I am like a kid in a candy store every time I go out. The interplay of color between the Indian Paintbrush, Bluebonnets and assorted other wildflowers allows me to stretch the spectrum in this natural palette.

Painting the Vibrant Colors of San Miguel by Niki Gulley

“Afternoon in the Park” ©2025 Niki Gulley
12″ x 16″ textured oil painting

Recently collectors of mine invited us to stay with them at their beautiful home in San Miguel de Allende in Mexico. I loved all of the gorgeous colors of the architecture and lush foliage blooming everywhere. Around almost every corner was a peaceful park inviting you to stroll through or just sit and enjoy the tranquility of the moment.

“Peaks and Valleys” Palette Knife Painting from Isle of Skye by Niki Gulley

Scotland Art Trek – Days 5: Isle of Skye – Quiraing
Led by Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

Next up on our Scotland Art Trek itinerary was a morning stop at the Quiraing, a unique area filled with high cliffs, hidden plateaus and unusual rock formations. Allowing a full morning for my painters to capture the land’s unique beauty, everyone did an amazing job! I chose this vantage point with some of the purple heather growing in the foreground, adding a nice color contrast to all of that lush greenery. The photographers hiked all around, capturing unique angles and then we all treated ourselves to lunch. Afterwards, we stopped at Mealt Falls to take in the waterfall’s power and beauty, and then we finished the day back in Portree.

“Colors of Colmar” Palette Knife Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Colors of Colmar” ©2025 Niki Gulley
12″ x 12″ textured acrylic painting on canvas panel

Painted on location in the Alsatian town of Colmar, France,  the scenery was inspiring everywhere you looked. Straight out of a postcard, practically every view is storybook picture perfect. Today I set up my easel amongst the Russian sage and Black-eyed Susans to capture their joy and energy with a sliver of the cross-timbered architecture in the distance to set the stage.  I hope you are transported to this beautiful, magical place!

“Field of Dreams” Large Triptych Sunflower Painting by Niki Gulley

“Field of Dreams” ©2025 Niki Gulley
SOLD • Three 48″ x 36″ canvases to form a 48″ x 90″ triptych
textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

Just sold through the Good Art Company Gallery! Field of Dreams is inspired from the beautiful sunflower fields we visited in Provence, France. The flowers seemed to stretch forever and the color explosion was out of this world! Back in my studio, I worked from a combination of photos, on-site sketches and memories. Painting the sunflowers full-sized in the foreground helps to bring them to life and hopefully transport you to this happy location. Including surprising pops of vivid reds and purples keeps your eye moving throughout the scene, seeing new things each time you look at it, and adds to the joyful feeling.

“Popping Sunshine” by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Popping Sunshine” ©2025 Niki Gulley

12″ x 24″ textured mixed media on canvas

I absolutely love it when I come across a whole field of wildflowers – there is something about the transformation of a single dainty flower into a dense explosion of color that inspires awe and delights your senses. I liked how these rows of poppies and rolling grasses created a gentle harmony, inviting you to wander into the distance, getting lost in the moment. Full of color and hope, may my “Popping Color” painting transport you to a happy serene place.

Miles of Lavender Fields Painting by Palette Knife Artist Niki Gulley

“Fragrant Fields” ©2025 Niki Gulley
16″ x 20″ textured acrylic painting on canvas by Niki Gulley

My husband and I recently were teaching and leading an Art Trek in Provence, and we were able to spend a couple of extra days exploring the area before everyone joined us. While in pursuit of the perfect lavender crop to paint and photograph, we came across this gorgeous field. The flowers were just breathtaking and stretched for what seemed like miles. Finding a tiny bit of shade, I set up my easel and went to work capturing all of that royal glory. And, it was a good thing I painted it when I did because the following week, my shade tree was roped off! I hope you, too, can experience the beauty of this joyful place.
