Textured Bluebonnet oil painting by Niki Gulley

“Texas Pride II” ©2012 Niki Gulley
20″ x 30″ textured oil painting on canvas
I painted these Texas bluebonnets and with extremely thick oil paint and palette knives to achieve depth and texture. The resulting image comes to life and is loaded with color and energy. In this wildflower series, I’ve painted the scene around the edges of the canvas on 1 and 1/2″ deep stretcher bars so that the painting can be hung without a frame for a unique sculptural effect.
If you are interested in this original painting or in Texas Pride II as a canvas print, please e-mail Niki Gulley for more information.

New Bluebonnet and Indian Paintbrush Painting

“Spring’s Glory, Texas Hill Country” ©2012 Niki Gulley
48″ x 30″ textured painting on wrap around canvas

was inspired by a recent trip to the Texas Hill Country. This spring conditions were perfect, and the bluebonnets were amazing! While we were near Fredericksburg, we took a scenic drive along the Willow City Look and as we approached the top of a hill about half way around, we were greeted by this gorgeous view of the rolling hills and bluebonnets and Indian Paintbrush in full bloom. Then, to top it off the sun was setting in the distance casting its golden glow and backlighting the wildflowers. I had to capture the magical moment, enhancing the kaleidoscope of colors in the sky and along the ground. Arranging clouds, the road and rows of bluebonnets in rhythmic sweeping shapes, create a harmonious landscape that flows with light, texture and color, and suggest a feeling of optimism about what’s to come.

New Texas Hill Country oil painting at Art in the Square

“Blue Horizon” Painting of the Texas Hill Country ©2011 Niki Gulley
Textured Oil on Wrap Around Canvas, 30” by 48”

Vivid indigo: when thick clusters of bright blue cover the rolling bluffs of our Texas Hill Country – you know spring is here! Texas Bluebonnets splash across the fields interspersed with fiery Indian Paintbrush and bright yellow Coreopsis. Wildflowers, winding paths and wind-tested live oaks fill this canvas with the joy of a clear spring day in the hill country.

This bluebonnet painting and many others will be available for you to see this weekend at Art in the Square in Southlake, TX, Booth #J5. Visit artinthesquare.com/default.aspx for details.

12″ x 12″ oil painting
These Texas bluebonnets and Indian Blanket are painted with extremely thick oil paint applied with palette knife on wrap around canvas with the painting continuing around the edges. I love how the extreme texture causes the paint and colors to jump off the canvas and come to life.

San Antonio Fiesta Arts Fair – this weekend

“Hill Country Retreat” by Niki Gulley
24″ x 36″ pastel

This year the bluebonnets were amazing thanks to ideal conditions – just the right amount of rain, sun and temperatures – to produce a solid sea of blue. This patch must have stood out to passersby since there was actually a path carved out down to dirt through the bluebonnets from so many families having chosen it for their photo opportunities. I liked how the trail led you through the Texas wildflowers to the beautiful hill country retreat in the background. I chose this vantage point so that you could feel like you were standing right in the middle of the bluebonnets and Indian paintbrush.
