I wanted this piece to be uplifting and full of color and energy. Set beneath wind swept clouds, sun sets on the horizon and illuminates everything it kisses. Casting its beautiful bronze glow across flowing grasses and golden petals, last light shines peace and hope. Perky, circular faces smile back at you and I hope all of your cares drift away while gazing into this magical moment.

“Running Red III” Textured Poppy Painting by Niki Gulley

In this series, I wanted to create pieces that are full of joy, energy, texture and light. Working on oversized canvases and painting the blossoms larger than life add to that feeling of hope and exuberance. Choosing to leave the background airy and working with thick layers of white on white paint, ribbons of brightly colored blooms dance across the canvas with spontaneity and freedom. Subconsciously, I feel like these light-filled visions came to me in response to so much bad news and the COVID lockdown. Searching for a way to create more space, room to roam and the freedom to live life to its fullest, I hope these paintings bring the beauty of nature inside and fill your spirit with light and cheer.

Just sold through the Good Art Company Gallery! I wanted this painting to convey the joy of being surrounded by our gorgeous Texas wildflowers. Painting these bluebonnets larger than life and flinging and pouring paint to create a joyful, kinetic kaleidoscope, I feel like the result really lifts one’s spirits. Playing with a calming palette of blues, yellows and greens and building up a lot of texture with palette knives also adds to the energetic, peaceful presence of being immersed in nature.

In this painting I wanted to create a dream-like feel using one of my favorite flowers, the poppy. There is something awe-inspiring about the transformation of a single dainty flower into a dense explosion of vibrant, energetic crimson that delights your senses and lifts your spirits. Arranging the wildflower masses in the foreground to create waves of color and repeating those curving shapes throughout the landscape add to a sense of joyful harmony and tranquility.

Making sure to not over blend my thick strokes so that you could see the marks and feel the energy found in nature, Pops of Red II is loaded with texture, color and movement. Vertical diagonal rows of ruby jewel tones lead your eye to the foliage in the distance, inviting you to stroll amongst the gorgeous wildflowers. On a visit to New Mexico, we were greeted to cheerful wildflowers blossoming, adding pops of joy and sunshine to the desert scenery. Repeating patterns and waves of color create a harmony within the painting, while rendering the blooms and their surroundings abstractly plays with taking a traditional subject matter and showing it in a contemporary way.
