New “Red Carpet Ride” Texas Wildflower Painting by Niki Gulley

“Red Carpet Ride” ©2020 Niki Gulley
24″ x 36″ textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

In this Texas wildflower series, I wanted to capture the excitement and energy felt during a beautiful day in April when the Indian Paintbrush, bluebonnets and wildflowers are painting the horizon in gorgeous shades of reds and blues. Driving through the Hill Country late one day, the sun was just starting to drop, casting this golden hue across all of the wildflowers it hit causing them to glow and dance in the warm light. Deep, long shadows and the abundance of rich crimson Indian Paintbrush added to the drama and magic of the moment. Focusing on the patterns of color and contrast of lights and darks, I wanted to communicate the emotion felt being surrounded by all of this Texas beauty.

New Abstract Texas Wildflower Painting by Niki Gulley

“Symphony in Springtime II” ©2020 Niki Gulley
36″ x 36″ textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

In this painting, I wanted to capture the rhythm, color, and density of our bluebonnets, Indian Paintbrush and vibrant wildflowers flowing along the grassy rises and falls of our berms in the Texas Hill Country. Making sure not to over blend my thick strokes so that you could see the marks and feel the energy found in nature. Repeating patterns and waves of color create a harmony within the painting, while rendering the blooms and their surroundings abstractly plays with taking a traditional subject matter and showing it in a contemporary way.

“Morning in Paradise” Palette Knife Seashore painting by Niki Gulley

“Morning in Paradise” ©2019 Niki Gulley
9″ x 12″ textured oil painting

I wanted this painting to be about the power of the ocean to lift your
spirits. Painting this piece on location, I strove to capture the sparkle the sun cast across the turquoise waters as it slowly rose above the horizon.
Creating bobbing diamonds that were mesmerizing to watch,

“Hazy Sunset” Palette Knife Seashore painting by Niki Gulley

“Hazy Sunset” ©2019 Niki Gulley
9″ x 12″ textured oil painting

Painting this piece on location, I wanted to capture the movement in the ocean as the tides lapped along the shoreline. With the waves creating their cathartic rhythmic sounds, I left my strokes loose to convey that energy and motion. There was a lot of haze this evening and it caused the sky to dance in these ethereal shades of pink and gold. I hope you, too, can feel the peaceful magic in the moment.

“Sun Up in Paradise” Palette Knife Seashore painting by Niki Gulley

I wanted this painting to be about the power of the ocean to lift your
spirits. Painting this piece on location, I was hoping you could hear
the gentle ocean tides lapping on the shore and the sun just beginning to rise, signaling a brand new day in paradise.

This morning the sky was the most intense beautiful red that caused the atmosphere to glow and I just had to capture that magic.

New “Through the Keyhole” Palette Knife Oil Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Through the Keyhole” ©2019 Niki Gulley
20” x 16” textured oil painting

I love the twisting, textured limbs of old oak trees, and the way these two branches formed a keyhole view of the forest beyond was fascinating. Arching the branches upward suggests a touch of whimsey like climbing a tree when you’re a kid. Loaded with texture and surprising pops of color, I hope you, too, are transported to an enchanted place filled with hope and wonder.

New “If a tree Falls” Textured Oil Painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

“If a Tree Falls” ©2019 Niki Gulley
24″ x 18″ Textured oil painting

I always love going to Turtle Creek, the natural oasis the city has created in the middle of Dallas. This painting was inspired from a time when you could actually climb down the rocks and enjoy the beautiful stream from below, being completely isolated from city noise and housing. I was drawn to these large abstract sweeping patterns of the water and land meeting with just a trickle of light illuminating the foliage in the distance and one lone trunk that has fallen.

New “Flowing into Autumn” Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

“Flowing into Autumn” ©2019 Niki Gulley
30″ x 48″ textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

I created “Flowing into Autumn” with many layers of paint, starting with a swirling thin application to form the tangled underbrush and flowing current to thick impasto strokes for texture and energy in the foliage and trunks. Water rushes downstream as autumn leaves dance in the gentle breeze. I hope you experience a feeling of peace and warmth being immersed in the beauty of nature, letting all of your cares drift away.
