Just Sold through the Good Art Company! In this Texas wildflower series, I wanted to capture the excitement and energy felt during a beautiful day in April when the bluebonnets and wildflowers are painting the horizon in gorgeous shades of blue, reds and golds. Driving through the Hill Country late one day, the sun was just starting to drop, casting this golden hue across all of the wildflowers it hit causing them to glow and dance in the warm light. Deep, long shadows added to the drama and magic of the moment. Focusing on the patterns of color and contrast of lights and darks, I wanted to communicate the emotion felt being surrounded by all of this Texas beauty.

The vague suggestion of bluebonnets and colorful wildflowers peek through the dancing golden tangle, leaving the landscape loose and free so that your imagination can tell its story. In this painting, I wanted to render Texas bluebonnets and Indian Paintbrush very abstractly. Focusing on the patterns of color that those vibrant reds and cobalt blues form, allows you to feel the excitement of peering into a huge field of wildflower glory. Mysterious light tries to break through the distant foliage and begin to illuminate the blossoms, beckoning you to explore what’s beyond.

In this painting, I wanted to capture the rhythm, color, and density of our bluebonnets, Indian Paintbrush and vibrant wildflowers flowing along the grassy rises and falls of our berms in the Texas Hill Country. Making sure not to over blend my thick strokes so that you could see the marks and feel the energy found in nature. Repeating patterns and waves of color create a harmony within the painting, while rendering the blooms and their surroundings abstractly plays with taking a traditional subject matter and showing it in a contemporary way.

Focusing on the rows of varied hues, I wanted to communicate the emotion felt being surrounded by all of this beauty.

New “Autumn’s Tapestry” Kid’s Perspective Painting by Niki Gulley

In this painting I wanted you to feel that child-like wonder of staring up into the treetops and heavens above. Choosing uplifting golds and reds contrasted against a turquoise-blue sky with gentle clouds drifting by, I’ve arranged the aspens in a circular pattern to give you a sense of laying on the ground, surrounded by the forest. Using diagonal leading lines with the tree trunks and limbs, your eye gazes into the focal point where all of the elements come together. Meanwhile, utilizing thick, curving paint strokes adds to that joyful, playful feeling of hope and discovery.

Early on a fall morning the sun breaks softly through leafy branches and casts early autumn’s palette across the creek. Silent water is ruffled by a gentle breeze. Arching over, bending into the quiet waters, a tree arches into the scene – encompassing, embracing. This painting captures the dreamy reflections and tranquil landscape of one of my favorite spots to paint on location near my home. It is painted in the traditional plein air oil manner, incorporating some heavy texture with palette knife.

“Through the Keyhole” Palette Knife Oil Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

I love the twisting, textured limbs of old oak trees, and the way these two branches formed a keyhole view of the forest beyond was fascinating. Arching the branches upward suggests a touch of whimsey like climbing a tree when you’re a kid. Loaded with texture and surprising pops of color, I hope you, too, are transported to an enchanted place filled with hope and wonder.
