“Flowing into Autumn” Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

April 27, 2021

SOLD • 30″ x 48″ textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

Just Sold! I created “Flowing into Autumn” with many layers of paint, starting with a swirling thin application to form the tangled underbrush and flowing current to thick impasto strokes for texture and energy in the foliage and trunks. Water rushes downstream as autumn leaves dance in the gentle breeze. I hope you experience a feeling of peace and warmth being immersed in the beauty of nature, letting all of your cares drift away.

New “Blossoming Dreams” Abstract Poppy Field Painting by Niki Gulley

March 2, 2021

20″ x 30″ textured mixed media painting on wrap around canvas

In this painting I wanted to create a dream-like feel using one of my favorite flowers, the poppy. There is something awe-inspiring about the transformation of a single dainty flower into a dense explosion of vibrant, energetic crimson that delights your senses and lifts your spirits. Arranging the wildflower masses in the foreground to create waves of color and repeating those curving shapes throughout the landscape add to a sense of joyful harmony and tranquility

New “Woodland Adventure” Palette Knife Aspen Tree Painting by Niki Gulley

January 25, 2021

18″ x 24″” textured oil painting on board

I find being immersed in nature can have such an uplifting effect, and I wanted to share that feeling with you in Woodland Adventure. I chose pure, intense reds and yellows contrasted against autumn greens to create a fall forest that vibrates with color and energy. I placed the vivid foliage in diagonal sweeping shapes to create a sense of movement, so that you can feel the wind gently rustling the leaves and causing them to dance on a beautiful fall day.

In this painting, I wanted you to you to experience the joy of looking up into the treetops – just like you did when you were a kid. Lying on the ground, not a care in the world, you gaze in wonderment. Choosing electric yellows and reds and flinging paint in multiple swirling layers add to that playful, childlike whimsy. “Standing Witness” Palette Knife Aspen Painting by Niki Gulley

October 15, 2020

“Standing Witness”©2020 Niki Gulley
16″ x 20″ textured oil painting

Recently, we visited Santa Fe and to escape the heat we ventured up the Santo de Cristo mountains to cool down among the beautiful, refreshing aspen trees. I was attracted to this grove in particular with their beautiful textured white bark and their proximity and angles to each other. I decided to include the sentinels behind, also, to give you a sense of being surrounded by the peaceful forest. Dappled light casts diagonal shadows and causes the grasses to dance and sparkle. I hope you can feel the serenity of this rejuvenating place.

New “Meandering Journey” Palette Knife Aspen Tree Painting by Niki Gulley

“Meandering Journey”

16″ x 20″ textured oil by Niki Gulley

Recently, we visited Santa Fe and to escape the heat we ventured up the Santo de Cristo mountains to cool down amongst the beautiful, refreshing aspen trees. I was drawn to this meandering path leading through the aspens with its dappled light creating such gorgeous shadows. Having fun capturing all of the different textures with palette knife from the lush grasses to the feathery wildflowers to the peeling bark on the aspen trees, I set out to recreate the peace and beauty of this forest. I hope you, too, can feel the serenity of this rejuvenating place and enjoy an uplifting walk in the woods.

“Purple Shadows” from the Willow City Loop by Niki Gulley

September 18, 2020

Painted on location along the Willow City Loop in Fredericksburg, TX, I was drawn to this tranquil spot, especially as the day was getting hotter. When I started the scene, there were just a few shadows being cast from the trees on the right but they kept growing as I was painting! I liked the rhythm they were creating so I decided to include their patterns and go ahead and chase the light (which is a no no for plein air painters). But there’s always exceptions to the rules, right? I hope you enjoy this cool peaceful place as much as I did.

September 17, 2020

I created this while on a painting competition for the American Impressionists Society which was held in Fredericksburg, TX this spring. We were open to painting anything that we would like and I ran across this beautiful red barn nestled in amongst the massive, gnarly trees on the LBJ Ranch and just couldn’t resist painting it.
