I wanted to capture the rhythm, color, and joy of prolific poppies flowing along this blossoming hillside. Set beneath a colorful sky with a few clouds drifting by on a beautiful day in springtime, wildflowers are in full bloom. Making sure to not over blend my thick strokes so that you could see the marks and feel the energy found in nature, Blossoming Joy is loaded with texture, vibrant hues and movement. Vertical diagonal rows of ruby jewel tones lead your eye into the distance, inviting you to stroll amongst the gorgeous tapestry. I absolutely love it when I come across a whole field of wildflowers – there is something about the transformation of a single dainty flower into a dense explosion of color that inspires awe and delights your senses. I find being immersed in nature can have such an uplifting effect, and I wanted to share that feeling with you in Woodland Adventure. I chose pure, intense reds and yellows contrasted against autumn greens to create a fall forest that vibrates with color and energy. I placed the vivid foliage in diagonal sweeping shapes to create a sense of movement, so that you can feel the wind gently rustling the leaves and causing them to dance on a beautiful fall day.

“Princess Gardens” in Edinburgh, Scotland Painting by Niki Gulley

Scotland Art Trek – First Day: Edinburgh
Led by Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

Just Sold! On the first day of our plein air painting and photography trip to Scotland, we began our adventure in the Medieval capitol city of Edinburgh. Filled with energy, fascinating architecture and history, we were all struck by its uniqueness and beauty. While the photographers shot and explored the city, we set up our easels close to our hotel to paint the lovely Princess Gardens that run through the center of the city. I set out to capture the lush hydrangeas lining this intricate stairway with just a glimpse of the ferris wheel in the background while some of my students did the same and others set out to recreate the interesting architectural details of the buildings. That evening we all gathered for a delicious Michelin restaurant dinner and compared our stories from the day. With sunny skies and great company, our first day in Scotland turned out to be a great start to the trip!

In this painting I wanted to create a dream-like feel using one of my favorite flowers, the poppy. There is something awe-inspiring about the transformation of a single dainty flower into a dense explosion of vibrant, energetic crimson that delights your senses and lifts your spirits. Arranging the wildflower masses in the foreground to create waves of color and repeating those curving shapes throughout the landscape add to a sense of joyful harmony and tranquility.
