Day 4 of Greece Art Trek with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

Day 4, Greece Art Trek:  Morning Location – Akrotiri, Santorini
5″ x 7″ oil painting by Niki Gulley
On the fourth day of our Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop in Greece, we visited Akrotiri, the remains from a Minoan civilization preserved during the volcanic eruption from the 16th century BC. The ancient city was fascinating! The beach next door also made for a beautiful, relaxing painting location!

Painting and Photographing in Santorini, Greece with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

Day 3, Greece Art Trek:  Santorini
7″ x 5″ oil painting by Niki Gulley

The next day we painted around the corner from hotel where we had this beautiful vantage point of the white domed church and the ocean below. The photographers viewed more of the town, while others relaxed at the pool at our hotel. That afternoon, we headed to a Santorini winery and sampled the local wines. Yum!

Taking a little time out to enjoy the view and sample the Greek wines, which are quite tasty!

“Diagonal Shadows” – New White Rock Lake Painting by Niki Gulley

“Diagonal Shadows” White Rock Lake ©2015 Niki Gulley
12” x 24” oil on canvas

Sunset draws lengthening shadows across the grassy waters edge at Sunset Bay, White Rock. The lake shimmers in the evening glow as sky high above fills with deep blues and before you the soft, moody colors stretch out, long lines beckoning you into the complex diagonal composition. Rich texture models the leaves, branches and tree trunk rimmed in the sunset and shadow. Vivid masses of color form the foliage on the opposite bank, fall at its peak. The long cast shadows draw you into the tranquil landscape and the peaceful, dreamy sunset at White Rock Lake.

New “45mph” Winter Landscape Palette Knife Oil Painting by Niki Gulley

“45 mph” ©2013 Niki Gulley
18” x 24” textured oil painting

On one of our first trips together, my husband and I drove to Colorado to capture the fall foliage, and were greeted by one of the earliest snowfalls on record. While not the golden aspen glory we expected, the pristine white of that first dusting was beautiful. I loved this scenic overlook as we rounded the corner, and as you can see there was no shoulder to pull over on to capture the scene. So quickly grabbing my camera, I snapped away as we whizzed past. In this shot, I particularly liked a sliver of the school-bus-yellow 45mph sign contrasting against the vivid azure sky and framing the right side of the composition to lead your eye back into the breathtaking drive.

Monet’s Water Lilies triptych oil painting by Niki Gulley – Just Sold

SOLD • “Orchestrating Radiance” ©2013 Niki Gulley
Three 48″ x 30″ canvases to form a 48″ x 90″ triptych
Textured oil painting on wrap around canvases
Recently Sold! I wanted this large-scale painting to be very uplifting, colorful and full of energy. Opting for warm colors and working with extremely thick paint and palette knives, I chose this lily pond reference from our visit to Monet’s Gardens in Giverny, France. The grounds were breathtaking and I could actually see his paintings come to life. I was drawn to the energetic flow and yet calming serenity in this view, and I positioned the shoreline, shadows and reflections in a curving pattern to add to that mood. Dripping willow leaves frame the foreground as water lilies skim the pond’s surface. The morning light peeking through the distant foliage added to a sense of mystery and promise that I wanted to capture in paint, and share with you that feeling of hope.

“Coming Together” Textured Aspen Tree oil painting by Niki Gulley

“Coming Together” ©2013 Niki Gulley
textured oil painting on gallery wrap canvas • 40″ x 30″
In this painting I wanted you to feel that child-like wonder of staring up in into the treetops and the heavens above. Choosing calming greens against a lavender-blue peaceful sky and arranging the two main aspens so that they meet in the middle, suggests a feeling of togetherness. While organizing the outlying trees in a circular pattern and using thick, curving, bold orange brushstrokes, creates a joyful, playful mood.

Day 4, Greece Art Trek with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

Day 4, Greece Art Trek:  Oia, Santorini
9″ x 12″ textured oil painting by Niki Gulley • SOLD

On the fourth day of our Greece Art Trek, we headed to the other end of the island, to the beautiful city of Oia. The painters chose to set up our easels by the lookout point at the edge of town, with some painting the windmills and skyline to our left while I chose this sprawling view of the city on the right. With a far more complicated scene, we had to allow a full afternoon and evening to capture the view. After so much white and blue architecture, I loved how several of the buildings were painted oranges, yellows and pinks contrasting agains the stark alabaster.

Next summer we will be leading an Art Trek to Paris and Provence, France so if you’ve always dreamed of painting, photographing and sightseeing during lavender and sunflower season in France, and following in the footsteps of Monet, Van Gogh and Cezanne, please join us for this amazing trip! Details will be coming soon on nikigulley.com/artreks.
