“Ice Drift” Palette Knife Painting of Iceland’s Iceburgs by Niki Gulley

“Ice Drift” ©2029 Niki Gulley
9″ x 12” textured oil painting

After enjoying the gentle beauty in Southern Iceland, we worked our way around the country counterclockwise and visited the frozen lagoons and icebergs in the east next. Uniquely shaped large ice chunks float along gorgeous turquoise waters as they drift out to sea. Each one has a distinct shape and color that make them fascinating to watch. This afternoon, I set out to capture this rather interesting square ice piece with aqua blue diagonal ridges running through it. I pulled in fairly tightly so you could focus on its design and then I painted in a glimpse of the mountain behind it to give you a sense of scale. Meanwhile, the water below becomes slightly blurry as the ice chunks slowly drift by and we are caught up in the mesmerizing moment.

Reykavik Oil Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Reykjavik” ©2020 Niki Gulley
9″ x 12″ textured oil painting on panel

My husband and I rounded out our Iceland adventure by finishing in the capitol city of Reykjavik. While a lot more peaceful than Dallas, TX, it was quite a contrast to be in the bustling city after the vast peacefulness of the countryside. One of the things I liked about Reykjavik was how colorful the buildings were painted and how much that brightened up a grey day. Setting out to capture those fun colors and the energy of the city, I chose to paint this overview of town with main street leading your eye all the way down to the harbor. Created with palette knife and a lot of paint, I wanted to leave this painting fairly loose to add to that lively feeling and energetic vibe I felt in Reykjavik.

“Falling Water III” Palette Knife Painting of Iceland by Niki Gulley

“Falling Water III” ©2020 Niki Gulley
12″ x 9” textured oil painting

Next up on our Iceland itinerary was visiting another waterfall. My husband and I love waterfalls, and it feels like Iceland has one even better than the next around every bend! So, needless to say we were pretty happy painting and photographing all of the falls the country had to offer. This cascade that we visited today is smaller in stature but no less impressive. It tumbles down over the rocky mountain and empties into a river carving its way through the lush, craggy valley below. I wanted to capture not only the falls, but the water’s path as it flows and snakes its way around the towering rock formations. Other than the midges that would swarm when the sun came out, it was a perfect afternoon!

New “Water’s Edge” Palette Knife Painting from Iceland by Niki Gulley

While in Iceland my husband decided to take a 3 hour round trip hike to a waterfall that I had seen the day before. So I decided to stay back at the beginning of the trail to paint. It was a beautiful setting, although it was somewhat difficult to paint with my 5 layers of clothes on that day!

New Lupine Painting from Iceland by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

I found this little pop of color near the end of our circumnavigation of Iceland and I just had to stop and paint it. I have always been drawn to blues in a scene and lupines are a rare occurrence for me, so I couldn’t pass up this opportunity.

New Hall of State Painting from Fair Park by Dallas Artist Niki Gulley

This was done during a paint out with fellow artists at the Hall of State in Fair Park near downtown Dallas. I loved the architectural structure of lines pulling your eye up, along with a golden archer aiming his bow to lose an arrow skyward.

“The Oldest House in Glen Rose” by Palette Knife Artist Niki Gulley

“The Oldest House in Glen Rose” ©2020 Niki Gulley
12″ x 16″ textured oil painting • Glen Rose, TX

Painted on location in Glen Rose, Texas with the company of my Outdoor Painters Society, I chose to paint the oldest house in town. It was so full of character and charm and I loved the big huge front porch and white-washed picket fence. The pergola welcomes you to step right in and relax on a rocking chair, visiting with neighbors and loved ones. Dramatic lighting and shadows add to the warmth of the moment.

“Water Hole” Textured Oil Painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

“Water Hole” ©2020 Niki Gulley
14″ x 11” textured oil on painting

I painted “Water Hole” on location in East Texas amongst the piney woods. This scene was so peaceful and I liked how the evergreens provided shade, keeping the warm Texas sun at bay. One lone boat sits on the shoreline, inviting you to sit down and row across the tranquil lake. I hope this piece transports you to a quiet weekend escape, surrounded by nature, with not a care in the world.

“Nature’s Ascension” Palette Knife Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Nature’s Ascension” ©2020 Niki Gulley
16″ x 12” textured oil on painting

I created “Nature’s Ascension” on a beautiful day last fall at one of my favorite painting spots near our home. I was attracted to the colorful dappled light raking across these steps and hillside, beckoning you to ascend. Meanwhile this majestic sycamore stands tall in its fall glory, also inviting you into the distance to discover what’s beyond. Painted with palette knife and thick oil paint, this landscape is filled with color, movement and energy!

“Edinburgh Castle” in Edinburgh, Scotland Painting by Niki Gulley

“Edinburgh Castle” ©2020 Niki Gulley
12″ x 9” textured oil painting

Scotland Art Trek – Second Day: Edinburgh
Led by Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

On the next day of our plein air painting and photography trip to Scotland, we spent a second day in Edinburgh, exploring the scenery some more. I took the painters further down the Princess Gardens so that we could get a good view of Edinburgh Castle perched high above town. Each student captured the looming structure in a slightly different, unique, beautiful way. Meanwhile the photographers covered a lot of ground, capturing Holyrood Palace, Calton Hill and the Miracle Mile. That afternoon we gave everyone free time to explore on their own. Some visited the castle, some shopped and some photographed some more. After dinner, the Military Tattoo was going on at the castle so many of our group got the once in a lifetime chance to take in that experience, too!
