Tuscany Painting Workshop with Niki Gulley

“Crimson Waves,” Tuscany ©2010 Niki Gulley
oil on canvas • 18″ x 48″

Inspired by the gorgeous rolling hills and prolific poppy fields in Tuscany, I chose this location to experiment with a different technique utilizing extremely thick paint (1/4″ – 1/2″ in thickness) and palette knives. I was extremely pleased with the results – a three-dimensional painting that explodes with color and energy.

If you’d like to join us in Tuscany for our next Plein-air Painting / Photography Workshop this September, e-mail me at Niki@NikiGulley.com. Space fills up quickly and we have room for only two more participants, with a final registration deadline of April 24th.

For more information, visit my website at NikiGulley.com

Also, I will be showing this painting at the Fiesta Arts Fair in San Antonio this weekend if you would like to see it in person, booth #74 at Navarro and Augusta Streets.

I look forward to seeing you there!

San Antonio Fiesta Arts Fair – this weekend

“Hill Country Retreat” by Niki Gulley
24″ x 36″ pastel

This year the bluebonnets were amazing thanks to ideal conditions – just the right amount of rain, sun and temperatures – to produce a solid sea of blue. This patch must have stood out to passersby since there was actually a path carved out down to dirt through the bluebonnets from so many families having chosen it for their photo opportunities. I liked how the trail led you through the Texas wildflowers to the beautiful hill country retreat in the background. I chose this vantage point so that you could feel like you were standing right in the middle of the bluebonnets and Indian paintbrush.

To see this painting inn person, visit my booth at the Fiesta Arts Fair in San Antonio this weekend (swschool.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=64) or e-mail me at Niki@NikiGulley.com for more information.

“Amapola,” Tuscany by Niki Gulley
11″ x 14″ pastel • sold

Driving south of Florence through Tuscany, you’ll see vast fields of red poppies carpeting the Italian landscape. Not only are the crimson masses beautiful, but the contrast of the vivid reds against the emerald greens of the rolling Tuscan hills is so dynamic, that I had to paint it!

If you’d like to join us this September on our plein-air painting / photography workshop in Tuscany, let me know. We have just 2 spots left!

American Airlines Exhibit

Current of Tranquility

“Current of Tranquility” ©2010 Niki Gulley

36″ x 60″ oil on canvas

In this painting I wanted to communicate the peacefulness that comes over me when I’m near water, choosing cool blues and purples to heighten that feeling. I also wanted just a hint of vibrancy in the painting so I chose yellow accents in the leaves and along the bank to add contrast and life.

“Current of Tranquility” and several of my other paintings were selected to exhibit at American Airlines’ headquarters and I’m excited about attending the opening reception this afternoon! If you’d like more information on this painting or for more details on corporate acquisitions, e-mail me at niki@nikigulley.com.

Painting Workshop Saturday

“Beyond the Trees” by Niki Gulley
18″ x 24″ pastel • sold

I love the way sunlight trickles through tangled branches and creates mystery, and capturing that light is such a fun challenge as in the case with “Beyond the Trees.”

If you’d like to learn how to translate the fleeting light outdoors onto canvas, join me in my plein-air painting workshop this Saturday. I still have 2 spots left and I’d love to have you paint with us! Visit nikigulley.com/ng2/?page_id=13 or e-mail me at Niki@NikiGulley.com for more information.

Tuscany Workshop – Register by Wed. March 24

“Parting Clouds” by Niki Gulley
36″ x 24″ oil painting

This painting was inspired by one of our trips to Tuscany. I’ve always been attracted to this lone clump of cypress trees and the story behind them, and on this day the clouds in the sky parted just enough to allow the sun’s rays to pass through and illuminate the cypress grove below in almost a spiritual way. I decided to keep the bold colors of my underpainting showing through in areas because I thought the intense reds added to the drama of the moment.

If you’d like to join us on our next Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop in Tuscany this September, let me know as it is limited to 10 participants and filling up quickly! Visit nikigulley.com/ng2/?page_id=13 for more information. Early registration deadline for a $300 savings is this Wednesday, March 24th.

If you have any questions, e-mail me at Niki@NikiGulley.com.

Painting Workshop March 27th

“Turtle Creek Impressions” by Niki Gulley
16″ x 20″ pastel • SOLD

I painted this piece at Turtle Creek in Dallas when the Azaleas were in full bloom. I wanted to capture not only their beautiful spring colors, but also the reflections in the water. A slight breeze gives a little shimmer to the creek’s surface.

If you’d like to expand your painting into a whole new world outside the studio, join me for my “Conquering Cabin Fever” plein air painting workshop next weekend. They are predicting no rain and 70 degrees, too! See nikigulley.com/ng2/?page_id=13 for more details. I’d love to have you join us!
