“Flowing Light” at Madison Art Fair on the Square

“Flowing Light” ©2011 Niki Gulley
36” x 60” textured oil on canvas

You walk down a path sheltered by autumn drenched trees, intrigued by the light flowing through the leaves and branches, casting shadows, colors changing with each gentle breeze, sunlight cascading down your pathway. Peaceful, tranquil, this painting flows around the canvas capturing the memory of autumn: lush crisp colors, crunchy leaves and a walk through the woods Walt Whitman would have envied.

Textured Poppy Painting “Dreams Revisited”

“Dreams Revisted” ©2011 Niki Gulley
36” x 48” textured acrylic on canvas

In this painting I wanted to create a dream-like feeling using one of my favorite flowers, the poppy, so I chose to paint this landscape at dusk as the sun is starting to set over the distant hills to add to that mood. I love the wildflower masses in the foreground creating waves of color, and the curving shapes adding to the sense of tranquility. I was mesmerized what the cinematography in the movie “What Dreams May Come” and my painting reminded me a little of those magical graphics, so I decided to title my piece the same.

Textured Aspen Trees oil painting

“Autumn Splendor” ©2011 Niki Gulley
36” x 48” textured oil on wrap around canvas

Shimmering colors of autumn: Aspen trees quiver, their light graceful leaves tremble and quake, silver and gold, silver and gold with each light breeze.

There is the quiet energy of change coming and vibrant color charges the woods. Crisp fall mountain air, clean bright skies overhead, a band of slender straight trucks cut bright strokes of white against a dazzling tumble of green, crimson and gold.

“Cascading Rhythms” new textured waterfall painting

“Cascading Rhythms” ©2011 Niki Gulley
12” x 24” textured oil on canvas

Water pounds its way down the falls: cascading, rushing, charging into the riverbed — flowing over rocks, swiftly moving forward. Untamed, the water finds its way over, under, around the boulder-strewn river. Tumbling waters drive up mists above the falls, the rhythmic sounds create a soothing harmony below. Autumn’s low light casts long lines through the Aspen trees and glowing verge.

“Colorful Transformation” textured birch tree painting by Niki Gulley

36″ x 48″ textured oil on canvas
Rather than create an exact replica of the forest, I wanted to focus on brilliant color and simple shapes to see if I could communicate the excitement I feel when surrounded by nature. Using energetic diagonal strokes and thick, textured paint, I hope you get a sense of the motion in the leaves and the power of nature to invigorate your spirit. I just love how this piece captured that essence!

“Transcending Luminosity” by Niki Gulley at Watters Creek

“Transcending Luminosity” ©2011 Niki Gulley
Three 48″ x 30″ canvases to form a 48″ x 90″ triptych
textured oil on wrap around canvas

I decided it would be a fun challenge to create an extremely large painting this winter, and I wanted the final piece to be very uplifting, colorful and full of energy. Opting for warm colors and working with extremely thick oil paint and palette knives, I chose this water scene for its energetic flow and yet calming serenity at the same time, and positioned the water lilies and my paint strokes in a circular pattern to enliven that mood.

Also available in limited edition stretched canvas prints.
I’ll have this contemporary landscape painting in addition to other large scale oil paintings at the Watters Creek Art Festival, watters-creek.com/events/Fine-Arts-Festival-Sun.htm, this weekend in Allen, TX. Please stop by my booth, #60, to see them in person.

Texas Bluebonnets & Wildflowers oil paintings by Niki Gulley

“Texas Treats IV” ©2011 Niki Gulley
12″ x 12″ oil painting on canvas
I painted these Texas bluebonnets & Indian Blanket with extremely thick oil paint and palette knives to achieve extreme texture so that the image comes to life and leaps off the canvas! In this wildflower painting series, I’ve painted the scene around the edges of the canvas on 1 1/2″ deep stretcher bars so that the paintings can be hung without a frame for a unique sculptural effect.

English Garden oil painting by Niki Gulley

Springtime Reflections ©2011 Niki Gulley
18” x 48” traditional oil on wrap around canvas

Pink, white and purple plump rhododendrons line the paths at the lake’s margin. Heavy blooms drowse along the peaceful pond, its still waters broken only by a swan sailing past. Lush bushes, Arcadian landscape, a rock bridge and a classical Greek temple are serene and silent under the overcast sky. Sunlight starts to peek through the cloud-cast and sparkles across the pond. Painted in traditional oils on a panorama canvas using soft edges and dreamy colors, this is a painting of tranquility and a tribute to the classic English landscape.
