With “Seasons of Change,” I wanted to focus on brilliant color and simple shapes to see if I could communicate the excitement I feel when surrounded by nature. Using energetic diagonal strokes and thick, textured paint, I hope you get a sense of the motion in the leaves and the power of nature to invigorate your spirit. I just love how this piece captured that essence!

Gulley will be the featured artist this month, and on April 21st the gallery will host a reception with the artist as part of Dallas’ Spring Gallery Walk. She will be there from 6-8 pm and will be available to talk about her new work and answer any questions. American Fine Art will be unveiling more than a dozen of my her new large textured oil paintings, with subjects ranging from aspen and birch trees, to uplifting sunflower fields to peaceful water lily scenes.

I wanted you to feel the joy and peacefulness of walking through the forest ablaze with color on a beautiful autumn day. With soft light illuminating the walkway and the distance sparkling in golden light, the only sounds to be heard are the crunching of fallen leaves underfoot and a slight breeze flickering the leaves overhead. JUST SOLD! I wanted this painting to be about the power and energy in nature to invigorate your spirit, so I chose to use warm vivid colors and thick staccato strokes to add to that feeling. I placed the foliage in diagonal sweeping shapes to create a sense of movement, and so that you can feel the wind gently rustling the leaves and causing them to dance.

New Impressionistic Bluebonnet Painting

A gorgeous spring day in Texas, with the bluebonnets, Indian Paintbrush and Texas wildflowers in full bloom, and just a few white fluffy clouds in the sky. This Texas hill country scene is painted with extremely thick oil paint and palette knives so that in person, the canvas is loaded with texture, color and movement to create a contemporary impressionistic twist on the traditional Texas wildflower painting!

Niki Gulley at Art City Austin this weekend

I painted these Texas bluebonnets and with extremely thick oil paint and palette knives to achieve extreme texture. The resulting image comes to life and is loaded with color and energy. In this wildflower series, I’ve painted the scene around the edges of the canvas on 1 and 1/2″ deep stretcher bars so that the paintings can be hung without a frame for a unique sculptural effect.

In this painting I wanted you to feel that child-like wonder of staring up in into the treetops and the heavens above. Choosing vibrant, cheerful yellows contrasted against a crystal blue sky and arranging the aspens in a circular pattern heightened by thick, curving paint strokes, both add to that joyful, playful feeling of hope and discovery.

“Dancing on Water” textured oil painting

Sunlight sparkles across aqua blue water,

diamonds of purple glitter the pond’s surface;

water lilies lift their faces toward the sun and gently dance across the water.

Golden sunlight filters through the brambles and ferns,

a touch of cardinal red peeks through purple and pink foliage

while azure skies reflect in the water.

Monet’s Garden painting by Niki Gulley & upcoming Art Trek to Paris

Just sold! I decided it would be a fun challenge to create an extremely large painting, and I wanted the final piece to be very uplifting, colorful and full of energy. Opting for warm colors and working with extremely thick oil paint and palette knives, I chose this lily pond reference from our visit to Monet’s Gardens in Giverny, France. The grounds were breathtaking and I could actually see his paintings come to life. I was drawn to the energetic flow and yet calming serenity in this view, and I positioned the water lilies and my paint strokes in a circular pattern to add to that mood. The morning light peeking through the distant foliage added to a sense of mystery and promise that I wanted to capture in paint, and share with you that feeling of hope.
