Day 4:  Ireland ART TREK
Cliffs of Moher
Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

Just Sold! On the fourth morning of our Ireland Art Trek, we explored the exotic Cliffs of Moher. Unfortunately, we received some of that Irish sunshine and only got in a quick glimpse before the sideways rain and wind got the best of us. Since the afternoon was washed out, too, we decided to paint our impressions back at the hotel. Several of the tourists went into town to shop and sightsee, and the photographers gathered around the fireplace to receive a lesson on Photoshop and Lightroom. It turned out to be a great day! That night we dined again on a delicious seafood dinner at a cozy garden restaurant nearby.

“Soaring Dreams II” by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Soaring Dreams II” ©2018 Niki Gulley
textured oil painting on canvas • 34″ x 34″

In this painting I wanted you to feel that child-like wonder of staring up into the treetops and heavens above. Choosing uplifting golds and reds contrasted against a lavender-blue sky with gentle clouds drifting by, I’ve arranged the aspens in a circular pattern to give you a sense of laying on the ground, surrounded by the forest. Using diagonal leading lines with the tree trunks and limbs, your eye gazes into the focal point where all of the elements come together. Meanwhile, utilizing thick, curving paint strokes adds to that joyful, playful feeling of hope and discovery.

New “Texas Trails II” Bluebonnet Oil Painting by Niki Gulley

“Texas Trails II” ©2019 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 18″ x 24″ textured oil painting

Just Sold! I painted “Texas Trails II” this spring while visiting the Texas Hill Country. This might have been one of the best years for the bluebonnets and wildflowers. The explosion of color along roadsides was incredible! After delivering new art to my gallery, The Good Art Company, in Fredericksburg we ventured north to the Willow City Loop to take in the breathtaking vistas and plethora of wildflowers that normally fill the landscape there. I love this spot as you ascend hill after hill to arrive at the top with beautiful views of the valley below. Erecting my easel along the roadside, I set out to capture the bluebonnets framing the foreground of this spectacular view. The road on the right invites you to leisurely drive through the loop on a beautiful spring afternoon. I hope you enjoy the journey and all of your cares drift away!

Ghost Ranch Palette Knife Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Desert Oasis” ©2019 Niki Gulley
18″ x 24″ textured oil painting

This summer my husband and I were asked to lecture for Southern Methodist University at the campus in Taos. We love the scenery in New Mexico so much that we decided to stay an extra week to paint and photograph. One day we drove towards Ghost Ranch where Georgia O’Keefe lived, stopping at this scenic overlook of the Rio Chama on the way. Loving the setting and the drama the light was creating on the distant rock formations, we decided to stay right there and capture its beauty.  Gentle S curves lead you down the river while shrubbery and mountain peaks create rhythmic patterns adding to the flow of the scene. I hope you, too, feel rejuvenated gazing into this desert oasis.

New “Waves of Wildflowers IV” Texas Hill Country Oil Painting by Niki Gulley

“Waves of Wildflowers IV” Texas Hill Country ©2019 Niki Gulley
12″ x 24″ textured oil painting

Painted on location in the Texas Hill Country, I was drawn to this expansive mass of yellow wildflowers, stretching all the way from foreground to background. The explosion of sunny color made me feel so happy that I wanted to capture that joy and excitement in my painting. To create that mood, I decided to leave a lot of crimson and gold in the sky to enhance that feeling while using diagonal staccato strokes to suggest energy and drama. Long sweeping shapes that flow across the horizontal panorama canvas add to the peace and happiness of being surrounded by Texas Wildflowers on a beautiful spring day.

“Waves of Wildflowers III,” Texas Hill Country ©2019 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 16″ x 20″ textured oil painting

Just Sold! I wanted to capture the rhythm, color, and density of our bluebonnets and vibrant wildflowers flowing along the grassy rises and falls of the berms so indicative of the Texas Hill Country. Making sure not to over blend my thick strokes so that you could see the marks and feel the energy found in nature, Waves of Wildflowers III is loaded with texture, color and movement. Vertical curving rows of cobalt and crimson lead your eye to the oak tree rising from the distance, providing some afternoon shade. I hope my painting lifts your spirits and adds joy to your home.

SOLD • 16″ x 20″ textured oil painting

Just Sold! Recently we loaded up the car and headed south to visit the Texas Hill Country to see the wildflowers in bloom. The thick patches we found did not disappoint! It’s so exciting to see a massive carpet of rainbow colors across our usually green hills, and I love how the bluebonnets signal that spring has arrived! After delivering new art to my gallery, The Good Art Company, in Fredericksburg we ventured north to the Willow City Loop to take in the breathtaking vistas and plethora of wildflowers that normally fill the landscape there. I was drawn to this peaceful river nestled into the shallow valley with abundant wildflowers adorning the hills on both sides. Erecting my easel along the upper bank, I set out to capture this colorful view, full of texture, energy and uplifting spring hues.

“Over the Hills III” Bluebonnet Painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

“Over the Hills III” ©2018 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 16″ x 20″ textured oil painting

Just Sold through the Good Art Company Gallery! Last spring we loaded up the car and headed south to visit the Texas Hill Country to see the wildflowers in bloom. While not as prolific as some years, the thick patches we found did not disappoint. It’s so exciting to see a massive carpet of blue across our usually green hills, and I love how the bluebonnets signal that spring has arrived! For our next stop on our Texas adventure, I decided to paint in Austin since the wildflowers were so prolific there. This field was covered with not only the bluebonnets that I love, but also the Indian Paintbrush and Indian Blanket that fills me with energy and joy when I see a field of all of that red! The blossoms formed such rhythmic rows as they iced the rolling hills that I set out to capture that harmony and movement in this piece. Painted with extremely thick oil paint and palette knives to achieve depth and texture, the resulting image comes to life and is loaded with color and excitement.

“Autumn Concerto” Fall Foliage Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

“Autumn Concerto” ©2018 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 16″ x 20″ textured oil painting

Just Sold through the Good Art Company Gallery! After we finished teaching our New England Fall Foliage Art Trek, my husband, Scott Williams, and I stayed in beautiful Vermont for another week. Each day we ventured out to capture the beautiful fall foliage on canvas and film before its intensity faded.

I painted these colorful birch trees on location with the fall hues emerging in all of their glory. I loved this grove of trunks that twisted and turned, slicing bright white through the tangle of autumn leaves. Painted over several mornings, the air was crisp but the sun made for beautiful painting conditions that illuminated the subject and warmed the air. I hope you, too, can feel the thrill of being surrounded by nature on a perfect fall day.
