Crimson Paintbrush fill Colorado’s undulating grassy hills with color joy. Sweeping clouds dance overhead while nature’s palette puts on a harmonic concert below. Making sure to not over blend my thick strokes allows you to see the marks and feel the peaceful energy. Repeating patterns and waves of color create a harmony within the painting, while rendering the blooms and their surroundings abstractly plays with taking a traditional subject matter and showing it in a contemporary way.

New “Meandering Journey” Palette Knife Aspen Tree Painting by Niki Gulley

Recently, we visited Santa Fe and to escape the heat we ventured up the Santo de Cristo mountains to cool down amongst the beautiful, refreshing aspen trees. I was drawn to this meandering path leading through the aspens with its dappled light creating such gorgeous shadows. Having fun capturing all of the different textures with palette knife from the lush grasses to the feathery wildflowers to the peeling bark on the aspen trees, I set out to recreate the peace and beauty of this forest. I hope you, too, can feel the serenity of this rejuvenating place and enjoy an uplifting walk in the woods.

“Standing Witness” Palette Knife Aspen Painting by Niki Gulley

Recently, we visited Santa Fe and to escape the heat we ventured up the Santo de Cristo mountains to cool down among the beautiful, refreshing aspen trees. I was attracted to this grove in particular with their beautiful textured white bark and their proximity and angles to each other. I decided to include the sentinels behind, also, to give you a sense of being surrounded by the peaceful forest. Dappled light casts diagonal shadows and causes the grasses to dance and sparkle. I hope you can feel the serenity of this rejuvenating place.

Having fun capturing all of the different textures with palette knife from the lush grasses to the leaves rustling in a gentle breeze to the peeling bark on the aspen trees, I set out to recreate the peace and beauty of this forest. Painted on location, I was drawn to this expansive mass of yellow wildflowers, stretching all the way from foreground to background blooming in the Hill Country. The explosion of sunny color made me feel so happy that I wanted to capture that joy and excitement in my painting. Hints of bluebonnets and Indian Paintbrush dot the landscape and long sweeping shapes that flow across the horizontal panorama canvas add peace and happiness as you’re being surrounded by Texas Wildflowers on a beautiful spring day.

Just Sold! This sunflower field that I visited in the middle of the pandemic was GORGEOUS. It felt like it stretched for miles. Bright, happy faces sharing their smiles with us and lifting our spirits. My heart literally swelled and I had to capture all of that joy on canvas. Utilizing vivid, uplifting hues, thick paint and bold, loose strokes add to the happy, carefree feeling of the moment and I hope you are transported there with me.
