Just sold through The Statton Gallery! I painted this colorful birch trees on location with the fall hues emerging in all of their glory. I loved this grove of trunks that twisted and turned, slicing bright white through the tangle of autumn leaves. Painted over several mornings, the air was crisp but the sun made for beautiful painting conditions that illuminated the subject and warmed the air. I hope you, too, can feel the thrill of being surrounded by nature on a perfect fall day.

New Autumn Aspen Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

I loved this brilliant aspen forest with its bright white aspen trunks slicing through all of the vibrant red and yellow foliage. The patterns of the trees created a sort of rhythm and I focused on the placement of the ivory sentinels, the diagonal purple shadows that they cast and the rustling of the leaves to add to that musical feeling. I hope you, too, can sense the energy and joy of being surrounded by nature as autumn is in full swing.

Inspired by the gorgeous aspen groves located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountain rising above Santa Fe, I wanted to capture this magical morning light casting its warm glow on the forest. Peaceful and mysterious, the sun’s rays peek through the knotted trunks causing the landscape to dance with light and awaken with autumn’s kaleidoscope of colors. Loaded with texture and layers and layers of paint, the forest shimmers with hope and discovery for the new day.

New “Three’s Company” Aspen Painting by Palette Knife Artist Niki Gulley

This summer we visited Santa Fe and to escape the heat we ventured up the Santo de Cristo mountains to cool down amongst the beautiful, refreshing aspen trees. In this painting I wanted you to feel that child-like wonder of staring up in into the treetops and the heavens above. Choosing calming greens against a lavender-blue peaceful sky and arranging the aspens so that they meet in the middle, suggests a feeling of togetherness. While organizing the outlying trees and mesmerizing clouds in a circular pattern and using thick, curving brushstrokes, creates a joyful, playful mood.

The landscape before me was almost unbelievable in its perfect beauty. Blue skies with fluffy clouds drifting overhead, majestic mountains in the distance with just a touch of unmelted snow icing the tops, and the plethora of wildflowers lining the walkways through this oasis in the city created a truly magical experience!

“Into the Woods III” Palette Knife Autumn Birch Painting by Niki Gulley

Just Sold! During our New England Fall Foliage Art Trek, we headed to the top of Stowe Mountain to explore. The painters set out to capture this gorgeous forest ablaze with color. I loved the split rail fence lining the walkway. Meanwhile, the photographers and tourists ventured on foot through the forest and then continued to explore by car the surrounding area, picking us up for lunch on their return.

That afternoon we visited local cheese and cider companies tasting Vermont’s treats. In the evening we enjoyed viewing everyone’s paintings and watching the photographers’ slide shows from the week. Afterwards we delighted in one last dinner together. A great treat with new friends after a fun-filled day!

“Waves of Wildflowers IV” Palette Knife Oil Painting by Niki Gulley

Painted on location, I was drawn to this expansive mass of yellow wildflowers, stretching all the way from foreground to background blooming in the Hill Country. The explosion of sunny color made me feel so happy that I wanted to capture that joy and excitement in my painting. Hints of bluebonnets and Indian Paintbrush dot the landscape and long sweeping shapes that flow across the horizontal panorama canvas add peace and happiness as you’re being surrounded by Texas Wildflowers on a beautiful spring day.

Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley Plein Air Painting in Breckenridge

The next day of our Colorado adventure, we were finally ready to leave the tranquility of the lake and discover new areas. To our delight, we landed in Breckenridge and were awed by the beauty surrounding the town. Finding this gorgeous park in the middle of the city, I set up my easel to capture the beauty and serenity surrounding me.
