Plein Air Painting Workshop in Venice, Italy with Niki Gulley – Day 4, the Rialto Market

“Tunnel Vision,” Venice ©2013 Niki Gulley
10″ x 8″ • textured oil painting
On the fourth day of our Venice Art Trek, we headed to the Rialto bridge and set up our easels by the morning market. Below you can see one of my watercolor students, Melissa, painting the clock tower, while others wandered the fruit, vegetable, meat and fish stands. I chose the vantage above because I liked the repetition of the arches in the negative space and how the back of the scene was flooded with light and activity on the Grand Canal.

If you’d like to join us on one of our upcoming European Art Treks, please let me know. Closer to home I’ll be leading a Plein Air Painting Workshop sponsored through the Good Art Company gallery in Fredericksburg, TX, April 5-7.

New Autumn Path Palette Knife Oil Painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

Autumn at the Dallas Arboretum ©2013 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 40″ x 30″ textured oil painting
Just Delivered – For this commissioned painting, my collectors asked me to create something special for them which would bring back fond memories. They love hiking and nature, and here in Dallas, they have a particular fondness for the Arboretum. Using thick textured oil paint with palette knives, I created this Arboretum fall path so that it is filled with color and dappled light, mystery and romanticism, and texture and energy!

“Carnival” new textured aspen painting

“Autumn Carnival” ©2012 Niki Gulley
36″ x 48″ textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

Painted with extremely thick oil paint and palette knives so that this canvas is loaded with texture and bursting with color, flickering autumn leaves seem to almost dance in a gentle breeze. I wanted this scene to be filled with movement and energy, so I incorporated a lot of diagonal and curving shapes in the design to suggest that feeling. Contrasting short staccato strokes against blended passages with my palette knives, also increase that sense of motion. I hope you, too, can feel the excitement of walking through the woods on a beautiful fall day, letting your cares slip away and your spirit being invigorated.

This painting, along with several more of my textured aspen and birch tree paintings are hanging at the Good Art Company in Fredericksburg, TX. Visit goodartcompany.com/gac/ for more details.

“Blazing Transitions III” textured birch painting

“Blazing Transitions III” ©2012 Niki Gulley
36″ x 60″ textured painting on canvas

Shimmering colors of autumn: Aspen and Oak trees quiver, their light graceful leaves tremble and quake, silver and gold, scarlet and tangerine, with each light breeze. There is the quiet energy of change coming and vibrant color charges the woods. Crisp fall mountain air, a band of slender straight trunks cut bright strokes of white against a dazzling tumble of amber and crimson. Staccato strokes and shimmering hues add to the feeling of change in the air and suggest the wind whistling through the foliage.
