I painted Autumn Memories to bring back the serenity I feel while walking through the woods on a cool autumn day, being totally immersed in nature, and not a care in the world. I chose pure, intense reds and yellows contrasted against autumn grasses and pops of purple to create a fall forest that vibrates with color, energy and sound. I hope you are transported with me to this cathartic aspen forest!

I find being immersed in nature can have such an uplifting effect, and I wanted to share that feeling with you in Woodland Adventure. I chose pure, intense reds and yellows contrasted against autumn greens to create a fall forest that vibrates with color and energy. I placed the vivid foliage in diagonal sweeping shapes to create a sense of movement, so that you can feel the wind gently rustling the leaves and causing them to dance on a beautiful fall day.

This sunflower field that I visited in the middle of the pandemic was GORGEOUS. It felt like it stretched for miles. Bright, happy faces sharing their smiles with us and lifting our spirits. My heart literally swelled and I had to capture all of that joy on canvas. Utilizing vivid, uplifting hues, thick paint and bold, loose strokes add to the happy, carefree feeling of the moment and I hope you are transported there with me.

Set beneath a colorful sky with a few clouds drifting by on a beautiful day in springtime, the poppies and wildflowers are in full bloom. Using broken impressionistic strokes in surprising hues, causes the landscape to dance and flow, and I hope all of your cares drift away while gazing into this cheerful scene.

New “Royal Rows” Lavender Field Painting by Niki Gulley

Inspired by a trip to Provence, these lavender fields were gorgeous and stretched as far as the eye could see! I wanted to focus on the perfectly planted purple rows, contrasted against the vibrant yellow sunflowers in the distance. I love how those colors pop next to each other. Fluffy clouds drift by in diagonal patterns that mimic the lavender aisles and create a harmony throughout the scene. Perspective lines converge, leading you to this joyful spot and I hope you can smell the amazing aromas and feel your spirits lifted while gazing into this scene.

Appearing in one of my meditations, I saw this image of the sunlight casting its glow around the landscape while live oaks embrace the scene and colorful wildflowers kiss your journey as you venture inward. Palette Knife Abstract Birch and Aspen Paintings by Niki Gulley

24″ x 24″ textured mixed media painting on wrap around canvas, framed in a silver floater frame

In this painting series, I wanted the focus to be on texture. Usually I paint with a lot of color, but I opted to use a limited palette on these pieces to really concentrate on the peeling bark of the aspen trees. Bordering on the edge of abstraction and the cusp of realism, Floating Expressions is loaded with layers and layers of paint, built up with thin glazes and then palette knife to create extreme dimension. Choosing to come in extremely close on the subject, I played around with various strokes and paint thicknesses to add depth and energy. At the end, I had to throw in a few of my signature strokes of color – a splash of gold, some touches of purple, and just a dab of fire-engine red for added excitement and unexpected color twists.
