On a visit to New Mexico, we were greeted to cheerful wildflowers blossoming, adding pops of joy and sunshine to the desert scenery. Repeating patterns and waves of color create a harmony within the painting, while rendering the blooms and their surroundings abstractly plays with taking a traditional subject matter and showing it in a contemporary way.

I absolutely love it when I come across a whole field of wildflowers – there is something about the transformation of a single dainty flower into a dense explosion of color that inspires awe and delights your senses. I liked how these rows of poppies and earth beneath them created a gentle harmony, inviting you to wander into the distance, getting lost in the moment. Bordering on the edge of abstraction and the cusp of realism, Knot in the Woods is loaded with layers of paint, built up with thin glazes and then palette knife to create extreme dimension. Choosing to come in tight on the subject, I played around with various strokes and paint thicknesses to add depth and dimension. Splashes of gold and pops of fire-engine red add excitement and energy to the expansive aspen forest.

New “Planted Sunshine III” Contemporary Impressionistic Sunflower Field by Niki Gulley

This sunflower field that I visited this summer was beautiful. Miles of bright, happy faces sharing their smiles with us and lifting our spirits. My heart literally swelled and I had to capture all of that golden joy on canvas. Just after sunrise, big, billowy clouds drift by on the horizon and are illuminated with color from the rising sun. Utilizing thick paint and palette knives to create broad, energetic strokes and not over blending my marks adds emotion and abstraction for the viewer to fill in their own story.

Painted just outside of Santa Fe, the fall colors were gorgeous this year. The contrast of complimentary oranges and blues and yellows and purples created an energetic symphony for the eyes! Bright sunshine warmed up the day and caused the light to glow and dance. I hope you can enjoy the escape of a leisurely drive through the beautiful autumn scenery of New Mexico.
