“Princess Gardens” in Edinburgh, Scotland Painting by Niki Gulley
Scotland Art Trek – First Day: Edinburgh
Led by Niki Gulley and Scott Williams
Just Sold! On the first day of our plein air painting and photography trip to Scotland, we began our adventure in the Medieval capitol city of Edinburgh. Filled with energy, fascinating architecture and history, we were all struck by its uniqueness and beauty. While the photographers shot and explored the city, we set up our easels close to our hotel to paint the lovely Princess Gardens that run through the center of the city. I set out to capture the lush hydrangeas lining this intricate stairway with just a glimpse of the ferris wheel in the background while some of my students did the same and others set out to recreate the interesting architectural details of the buildings. That evening we all gathered for a delicious Michelin restaurant dinner and compared our stories from the day. With sunny skies and great company, our first day in Scotland turned out to be a great start to the trip!

Palette Knife Oil Painting from Venice by Niki Gulley
“Venetian Textures II” ©2022 Niki Gulley
16″ x 12″ textured oil on canvas panel
I started this piece during our Plein Air / Photography Art Trek Workshop that my husband, Scott Williams, and I lead in Venice, Italy. We had painted several other grand locations, but decided on day three to paint a more intimate vignette of the canals. Since the whole city is on water, I love how their “garage doors” are actually for their boats! In this painting, I wanted to focus on all of the wonderful architectural textures and age of the homes as seen in the peeling stucco, crumbling bricks and weathered wood. Luckily I had a steady stream of gondolas passing as I was painting so I could add one in to set the mood.

12″ x 18″ Textured Acrylic on Panel
Painted on location, this beautiful, peaceful spot kept calling me back to capture it. Between the soft morning light, the carpet of azure blues formed by rows and rows of Texas bluebonnets and the gentle shimmer on the pond’s surface, I?had to capture the tranquility of the moment. I hope you are also transported to an uplifing place overflowing with the cathartic feelings of being surrounded by Texas’ beauty in springtime.

New “Enduring Legacy” Texas Landscape by Impressionist Artist Niki Gulley
24″ x 12″ textured acrylic painting on 1.5″ gallery wrap canvas with the scene continuing around the edges
These two massive, gnarly trees seemed to rise out of nowhere amongst the rolling fields of Texas bluebonnets. I feel like they had a story to tell, and I needed to capture their enduring presence by making them the focus of my painting. Purposely choosing this elongated canvas gives their trunks and limbs plenty of room to express their legacy and emphasize their majesty. Exciting pops of color, energetic strokes and a touch of whimsy add to the joy of these ancestral beauties.
