Focusing on the patterns of color that those vivid reds and cobalt blues form, allows you to feel the excitement of peering into a huge field of blooming glory. Mysterious light tries to break through the distant foliage and begin to illuminate the blossoms, beckoning you to explore what’s beyond.

In this painting, I wanted to render the Indian Paintbrush and Texas wildflowers abstractly. Focusing on the patterns of color that those vibrant reds, serene greens and warm pops of light form, allows you to feel the excitement of peering into a huge field of wildflower glory. Mysterious light begins to break through the distant foliage, illuminating the blossoms and guiding your way on your morning walk through the spring glory. That dreamy dawn light beckons you to slow down, revel in the journey and then explore what’s beyond while taking in nature’s symphony.

“Blossoming Dreams II” Abstract Bluebonnet Painting by Niki Gulley

I wanted to show Texas’ spring landscape in a completely different way. Making sure not to over blend my thick strokes so that you could see the marks and feel the energy found in nature. Repeating patterns and waves of color create a harmony within the painting, while rendering the bluebonnets and wildflowers along with their surroundings abstractly plays with taking a traditional subject matter and showing it in a contemporary way. With an aura of mystery, late day light touches the tops of the grasses and hills with glimmers of hope.

I painted “Spring Forward” while visiting the Texas Hill Country. The explosion of color along roadsides was incredible! This morning the sun kept peeking in and out of the clouds, creating a soft glow to everything it touched. I wanted to capture that magical light illuminating your journey lined by bluebonnets and Indian paintbrush. I hope you, too, can feel the excitement of springtime with the wildflowers abloom!

Hill Country Bluebonnet Commissioned Painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

Just Shipped! This year my collectors reached out to me to create two special custom pieces for their new home in Colorado. I wish it had been under happier circumstances, though. You see they were one of the unfortunate families devastated by last year’s Colorado wildfires and everything they owned was burned to the ground. My heart broke when they told me their story.

But, I was so honored when they informed me that I was the first artist they contacted to replace their former art collection. And, on top of that I was to go in the place of a William Slaughter painting that they had owned for 40 years! Large shoes to fill, but I was excited to create something uplifting to bring back fond memories for them. Set amongst the rolling landscape of the Texas Hill Country, I wanted them to feel the warmth and beauty on this perfect spring day while out for a leisurely drive among the cheerful bluebonnets and Texas wildflowers.
