I wanted to capture this magical morning light and the quiet, mysterious mood created from the sun’s rays peeking through the aspen trees. Loaded with texture and layers and layers of paint, the forest shimmers with hope and discovery for the new day.

New “Forest Guide” Palette Knife Autumn Painting by Niki Gulley

“Forest Guide” ©2021 Niki Gulley
20″ x 30″ textured mixed media painting
on 1.5″ wrap around canvas with the painting continuing around the edges

In this forest, the kaleidoscope of autumn colors was ablaze, and I was attracted to the dappled light raking across the trail, illuminating the winding path and casting long shadows. The sunlight was almost beckoning us to enjoy a peaceful, relaxing walk in the woods!

“Forest’s Edge” ©2020 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 36″ x 60″ textured oil painting on canvas

Just Sold through the Good Art Company Gallery! I love being immersed in nature. After living in a city surrounded by concrete and noise, I find being surrounded by mother nature to be extremely cathartic, peaceful and rejuvenating. In Forest Edge, I wanted to capture those feelings of happiness and tranquility. Working first with thin drippy paint, and then building up thick layers of oil paint with palette knives to achieve extreme dimension, this painting is loaded with movement, energy and color. I hope it lifts your spirits and recharges your batteries while bringing texture, joy and the outdoors inside your home.

New Autumn Aspen Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Painted Forest” ©2021 Niki Gulley
18″ x 24″ textured mixed media painting
on 1.5″ wrap around canvas with the painting continuing around the edges

I loved this brilliant aspen forest with its bright white aspen trunks slicing through all of the vibrant red and yellow foliage. The patterns of the trees created a sort of rhythm and I focused on the placement of the ivory sentinels, the diagonal purple shadows that they cast and the rustling of the leaves to add to that musical feeling. I hope you, too, can sense the energy and joy of being surrounded by nature as autumn is in full swing.

“Reclining Thoughts” New Textured Aspen Tree Painting by Niki Gulley

“Reclining Thoughts” ©2013 Niki Gulley
48″ x 36” textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

In this painting, I wanted you to you to experience the wonderment of looking up into the treetops – just like you did when you were a kid. Lying on the ground, not a care in the world, you gaze in wonderment as the clouds drift by. Choosing playful colors and thick chunky staccato strokes add to that childlike whimsy and I hope you are transported back to a happy, carefree time and place.

Transformation oil painting

SOLD • 48″ x 60″ oil painting

Rather than create an exact replica of the forest, I wanted to focus on brilliant color and simple shapes to see if I could communicate the excitement I feel when surrounded by nature. Using energetic diagonal strokes and thick, textured paint, I hope you get a sense of the motion in the leaves and the power of nature to invigorate your spirit. I just love how this piece captured that essence!

New Framed Aspen Tree oil paintings

5″ x 7″ Aspen oil paintings by Niki Gulley
I painted these miniature aspen trees with palette knife and extremely thick oil paint so that the resulting paintings are filled with color, texture and movement. These oils look great in pairs and threes, and the wide black frame really draws your eye into the artwork and sets each one apart. If you’d like additional information or would like to purchase my aspen tree paintings, e-mail Niki Gulley.
