“Reclining Thoughts” Textured Aspen Tree painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

“Reclining Thoughts” ©2021 Niki Gulley
40″ x 30” textured oil painting on wrap around canvas
In this painting, I wanted you to you to experience the joy of looking up into the treetops – just like you did when you were a kid. Lying on the ground, not a care in the world, you gaze in wonderment as the clouds drift by. Choosing warm yellows, reds and greens and utilizing thick chunky staccato strokes add to that childlike whimsy and I hope you are transported back to a happy, carefree time and place.

After setting up my easel in this idyllic spot in Breckenridge, I began capturing the serenity surrounding me. The landscape before me was almost unbelievable in its perfect beauty. Blue skies with fluffy clouds drifting overhead, majestic mountains in the distance with just a touch of unmelted snow icing the tops, and the plethora of wildflowers lining the walkways through this oasis in the city created a truly magical experience!

The next day of our Colorado adventure, we were finally ready to leave the tranquility of the lake and discover new areas. To our delight, we landed in Breckenridge and were awed by the beauty surrounding the town. Finding this gorgeous park in the middle of the city, I set up my easel to capture the beauty and serenity surrounding me.

Painting Lupines along the Lake with Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

We enjoyed our previous day so much along the lakeshore in Colorado that we decided to return there again the next day. Scott was highly amused watching the paddle boarders and their pups. Meanwhile, I got to work capturing this gorgeous view. A path was beaten down through the thick mass of aspen trees, leaving a perfect peep hole through the woods out onto the lake. Lupine and wildflowers dotted the grasses adding their joy and color to this perfect peaceful moment!

New “Sparking the Imagination” by Palette Knife Artist Niki Gulley

“Sparking the Imagination” ©2021 Niki Gulley
36″ x 36″ textured mixed media on 1.5″ gallery wrap canvas with the painting continuing around the edges

With “Sparking the Imagination,” I wanted you to feel that child-like wonder of staring up into the treetops, mesmerized by the scene overhead. I’ve arranged the trunks in a spiral pattern so that you have a sense of laying on the ground, surrounded by woodland, connecting with nature and the heavens above. Flowing in an ascending circular pattern, transitioning from spring, summer, winter, fall and back again to spring, reminds us of the cyclical forces of life and what our place can be within it.

New “Heading to the Mountains” Palette Knife Aspen Painting by Niki Gulley

“Heading to the Mountains” ©2021 Niki Gulley
16″ x 20″ textured oil painting on canvas panel

Painting in the mountains, especially this year was so cathartic and emotional. It was such a joy to be there surrounded by these amazing fall colors, that it would bring me to tears every day. I felt so fortunate to be able to do this when so many people weren’t able to travel, that I poured my heart and soul into every painting. I hope that you can feel the joy that I felt when you see them.
