This series or Texas wildflowers, bearded irises and ruby red poppies, incorporates extremely thick paint applied with palette knife along with drips and swirls to add energy and whimsy. New Bluebonnet Painting from the Texas Hill Country by Niki Gulley

“Spring Forward V” ©2021 Niki Gulley
24″ x 12″ textured mixed media painting on 1.5″ wrap around canvas with the painting continuing around the edges

I wanted to capture the excitement and energy felt during a beautiful April day when the Texas wildflowers are painting the horizon in their uplifting palette. Driving through the hill country in springtime, there is such an amazing explosion of color from the bluebonnets, Indian Paintbrush, coreopsis, Evening Primrose and the plethora of wildflowers, that it fills your heart with joy and awe. Focusing on the rows of varied hues, I wanted to communicate the emotion felt being surrounded by all of this beauty.

I painted “Spring Forward” while visiting the Texas Hill Country. The explosion of color along roadsides was incredible! This morning the sun kept peeking in and out of the clouds, creating a soft glow to everything it touched. I wanted to capture that magical light illuminating your journey lined by bluebonnets and Indian paintbrush. I hope you, too, can feel the excitement of springtime with the wildflowers abloom!

“Flowering Currents IV” ©2021 Niki Gulley
30” x 40″ textured mixed media painting
on 1.5″ wrap around canvas with the painting continuing around the edges

I absolutely love it when I come across a whole field of wildflowers – there is something about the transformation of a single dainty flower into a dense explosion of color that inspires awe and delights your senses. I liked how these rows of poppies and earth beneath them created a gentle harmony, inviting you to wander into the distance, getting lost in the moment. Full of color and hope, may “Flowering Currents” transport you to a happy serene place.

I’m excited to have been invited to exhibit amongst the talented artists at Marigold Arts gallery in Santa Fe, NM! “Flowering Currents IV” and several of my Southwest landscapes will be hanging there, so if you are in the area, please stop in and visit or check them out online, http://www.marigoldarts.com.

“Waves of Wildflowers IV” Palette Knife Oil Painting by Niki Gulley

“Waves of Wildflowers IV”  ©2019 Niki Gulley
12″ x 24″ textured oil painting

Painted on location, I was drawn to this expansive mass of yellow wildflowers, stretching all the way from foreground to background blooming in the Hill Country. The explosion of sunny color made me feel so happy that I wanted to capture that joy and excitement in my painting. Hints of bluebonnets and Indian Paintbrush dot the landscape and long sweeping shapes that flow across the horizontal panorama canvas add peace and happiness as you’re being surrounded by Texas Wildflowers on a beautiful spring day.

New “Blossoming Dreams II” Abstract Bluebonnet Painting by Niki Gulley

“Blossoming Dreams II” ©2021 Niki Gulley
24″ x 36″ textured mixed media painting on 1.5″ wrap around canvas with the painting continuing around the edges

I wanted to show Texas’ spring landscape in a completely different way. Making sure not to over blend my thick strokes so that you could see the marks and feel the energy found in nature. Repeating patterns and waves of color create a harmony within the painting, while rendering the bluebonnets and wildflowers along with their surroundings abstractly plays with taking a traditional subject matter and showing it in a contemporary way. With an aura of mystery, late day light touches the tops of the grasses and hills with glimmers of hope.

This idyllic setting just screamed Texas to me and I had to paint it. The quintessential windmill spins in the distance, signaling a change in seasons as spring leaps forward. Colorful bluebonnets fill the landscape, inviting you to wander through wildflower fields, noble oaks and onto hilltops ahead, sure to treat your journey with amazing views of the Texas Hill Country.
