New “Sun’s Bounty III” Palette Knife Oil Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Sun’s Bounty III” ©2019 Niki Gulley
24″ x 48″ textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

Sun’s Bounty is inspired from the beautiful sunflower fields we visited in Provence, France. The flowers seemed to stretch forever and the color explosion was out of this world! Back in my studio, I worked from a combination of photos, on-site sketches and memories. Painting the sunflowers full-sized in the foreground helps to bring them to life and hopefully transport you to this happy location. Including surprising pops of vivid reds and purples keeps your eye moving throughout the scene, seeing new things each time you look at it, and adds to the joyful feeling.

New “Forest Edge” Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

“Forest’s Edge” ©2019 Niki Gulley
36″ x 60″ textured oil painting on canvas

I love being immersed in nature. After living in a city surrounded by concrete and noise, I find being surrounded by mother nature to be extremely cathartic, peaceful and rejuvenating. In Forest Edge, I wanted to capture those feelings of happiness and tranquility. Working first with thin drippy paint, and then building up thick layers of oil paint with palette knives to achieve extreme dimension, this painting is loaded with movement, energy and color. I hope it lifts your spirits and recharges your batteries while bringing texture, joy and the outdoors inside your home.

New “Rhythm Reflections” Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

“Rhythm Reflections” ©2019 Niki Gulley
36″ x 60″ textured oil painting on canvas

I love being immersed in nature. After living in a city surrounded by concrete and noise, I find being surrounded by mother nature to be extremely cathartic, peaceful and rejuvenating. In Rhythm Reflections, I became fascinated with the mirror reflection on the aspen trees in the water below the horizon line. With the lake surface slightly blurring the individual leaves, patterns started emerging that created a sort of rhythm that I found mesmerizing. Working first with thin drippy paint, and then building up thick layers of oil paint with palette knives to achieve extreme dimension, this painting is loaded with movement, energy and color. Leaving the composition slightly abstracted gives you a chance to form your own contemplative narrative with nature.

“Autumn Concerto” Fall Foliage Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

“Autumn Concerto” ©2018 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 16″ x 20″ textured oil painting

Just Sold through the Good Art Company Gallery! After we finished teaching our New England Fall Foliage Art Trek, my husband, Scott Williams, and I stayed in beautiful Vermont for another week. Each day we ventured out to capture the beautiful fall foliage on canvas and film before its intensity faded.

I painted these colorful birch trees on location with the fall hues emerging in all of their glory. I loved this grove of trunks that twisted and turned, slicing bright white through the tangle of autumn leaves. Painted over several mornings, the air was crisp but the sun made for beautiful painting conditions that illuminated the subject and warmed the air. I hope you, too, can feel the thrill of being surrounded by nature on a perfect fall day.

New Winter Palette Knife Aspen Tree Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Winter Hues” ©2018 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 12″ x 12″ oil on canvas

Just Sold! I painted these winter aspen trees with palette knife and extremely thick paint. I love how the chunky paint adds to the texture of the bark and the movement in the snow and branches. The painting continues around the edges of the wrap around canvas for a sculptural-like frameless piece of art.

These aspens and birches look great hung alone to brighten up a little spot, or in a grouping with some of my other 12×12 trees. Hang them horizontally, vertically, on a diagonal or stacked. If interested in seeing companion pieces, please e-mail Niki Gulley for options.

New “Relaxation Awaits” by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Relaxation Awaits” • 16″ x 20″ textured oil painting
 ©2018 Niki Gulley

On the last day of our New England Fall Foliage Art Trek that my husband, Scott Williams, and I taught, we painters stayed right at our b and b to capture the beautiful views of fall foliage in all its splendor. I decided to paint this view out back, since I’d been admiring it every day of the trip. It was a gorgeous morning with vibrant fall colors frosting the foliage. This set of Adirondack chairs was so inviting, just welcoming you to sit, relax and enjoy the view. Long side lighting created dramatic shadows and a glow to the grasses. I hope you can escape and rejuvenate with me!

New “Autumn Hideaway” by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Autumn Hideaway”  ©2019 Niki Gulley
16″ x 20″ textured oil painting

After we finished teaching our Art Trek to Vermont, my husband and I stayed another few days to try to capture the gorgeous scenery on canvas and film. This morning, we ventured up to the majestic overlook by the Von Trapp property to capture the spectacular scenery. I loved how this cabin was perfectly tucked into the mountainside surrounded by vibrant fall foliage. The slightly overcast day made the colors pop even more! I hope you, too, can enjoy the crisp autumn air and a peaceful escape from the bustle of city life.

New “Autumn Awakening” by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Autumn Awakening” • 16″ x 20″ textured oil painting
 ©2018 Niki Gulley

As we were nearing the end of our New England adventure, the temperature dropped 30 degrees overnight and we woke up to 20 degrees and frost the next morning. Luckily the view out our window was beautiful and I could continue to paint the magnificent fall foliage from the comfort of indoors that morning! The lighting coming through the clouds was so dramatic, causing the leaves to glow. The soft breeze that was blowing caused the foliage to sway and dance to its own rhythm and I wanted to capture that movement and energy in “Autumn Awakening.” I liked how the distant mountain was a deep shade of purple since the sun wasn’t on it, and how it set off the contrasting complimentary colors in the foreground. Created with palette knife and thick paint, this canvas is loaded with texture, color and movement.
