New “Three’s Company” Aspen Painting by Palette Knife Artist Niki Gulley

“Three’s Company” ©2021 Niki Gulley

20″ x 16″ textured oil painting on canvas panel

A couple of weeks ago, we visited Santa Fe and I demonstrated my technique in oils at Marigold Arts Gallery. After the sweltering heat in Dallas, the weather felt wonderful in New Mexico and I thoroughly enjoyed meeting everyone! Here is my finished painting, “Three’s Company.” I hope you can feel the joy and wonder of staring up into the treetops just like you did when you were a kid.

“Flowering Currents” Desert Landscape Painting by Niki Gulley

“Flowering Currents” ©2021 Niki Gulley
24” x 30″ textured mixed media painting
on 1.5″ wrap around canvas with the painting continuing around the edges

On a visit to New Mexico, we were greeted to cheerful wildflowers blossoming, adding pops of joy and sunshine to the desert scenery. Repeating patterns and waves of color create a harmony within the painting, while rendering the blooms and their surroundings abstractly plays with taking a traditional subject matter and showing it in a contemporary way.

Inspired by the gorgeous aspen groves located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountain rising above Santa Fe, I wanted to capture this magical morning light casting its warm glow on the forest. Peaceful and mysterious, the sun’s rays peek through the knotted trunks causing the landscape to dance with light and awaken with autumn’s kaleidoscope of colors. Loaded with texture and layers and layers of paint, the forest shimmers with hope and discovery for the new day.

This Saturday I will  be demonstrating at my Santa Fe Gallery, Marigold Arts, from 10am – 2pm. If you are in the area, stop by, say hello and watch my process. I look forward to seeing you tomorrow!

Enjoying the concert of aspen leaves rustling in the breeze and the beauty of fall ablaze with color, I felt invigorated as I began painting this aspen forest. The setting was so mesmerizing and rejuvenating that I wanted to communicate that joyful feeling of discovery. Filling the canvas with energetic staccato strokes and bold colors, in addition to gently arching the tree trunks reaching towards the sky, all add to that uplifting feeling of being immersed in nature’s symphony.

Capturing the excitement and energy I feel while being immersed in the nature, “Counting Time” is loaded with vibrant autumn colors, extremely thick textured paint, movement and spontaneity. I absolutely love it when I come across a whole field of wildflowers – there is something about the transformation of a single dainty flower into a dense explosion of color that inspires awe and delights your senses. I liked how these rows of poppies and earth beneath them created a gentle harmony, inviting you to wander into the distance, getting lost in the moment. Full of color and hope, may “Flowering Currents” transport you to a happy serene place.

New “A Knot in the Woods II” Abstract Aspen Painting by Niki Gulley

“Knot in the Woods II” ©2021 Niki Gulley

Scrolling bark peels back like white washed parchment revealing secrets in the deeply textured wood below. A painting of grace and beauty, its verticality is offset by diagonal glowing autumn colors. Each stroke defined by thick textured paint and rich colors contrasted against subtle ivories, strike a reverberating chord and create a visual vibration that resonates in an optical song.
