Plein Air Oil Painting of Laggos, Portugal by Niki Gulley

Laggos, Portugal ©2018 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 5″ x 7″ textured oil painting

Just Sold! I wanted this painting to be about the power of the ocean to lift your spirits. Painting this piece on location, as the sun rose, I wanted to capture the gorgeous rock formations and the beautiful colors in the ocean. Whenever I visit the beach I always feel rejuvenated, and I hope I’ve translated that onto the canvas for you to experience it, too.

New “April’s Palette II” Bluebonnet Painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

“April’s Palette II,” Texas Hill Country ©2018 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 12″ x 18″ textured oil painting

Just Sold! Recently we loaded up the car and headed south to visit the Texas Hill Country to see the wildflowers in bloom. While not as prolific as some years, the thick patches we found did not disappoint. It’s so exciting to see a massive carpet of blue across our usually green hills. I love how the bluebonnets signal that spring has arrived! For our first stop, I chose this colorful field north of Austin and set my easel up to capture its beauty. I was drawn to not only the vivid wildflowers, but also the gentle hills and this rocky ledge they were perched upon. With some fluffy clouds drifting overhead, it turned out to be a perfect day to paint! I hope you can feel the joy and energy of springtime in Texas.

Vermont Fall Foliage Art Trek with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams
Day 1: Woodstock

This October my husband, Scott Williams, and I taught a plein air painting and photography workshop in Vermont. Our timing was perfect and fall colors were amazing! Our first stop was touring the beautiful countryside and farmland around Woodstock. My painters and I set up our easels  in front of this picturesque barn set in a valley with an explosion of autumn colors for the background. The photographers shot for a while and then continued on to explore more of the area. We reconvened for lunch and that afternoon sampled local cheeses and maple syrups. Delicious! That night, we enjoyed an amazing farm-to-table dinner at a local restaurant.

New “Over the Hills III” Bluebonnet Painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

“Over the Hills III” ©2018 Niki Gulley
16″ x 20″ textured oil painting

Recently we loaded up the car and headed south to visit the Texas Hill Country to see the wildflowers in bloom. While not as prolific as some years, the thick patches we found did not disappoint. It’s so exciting to see a massive carpet of blue across our usually green hills, and I love how the bluebonnets signal that spring has arrived! For our next stop on our Texas adventure, I decided to paint in Austin since the wildflowers were so prolific there. This field was covered with not only the bluebonnets that I love, but also the Indian Paintbrush and Indian Blanket that fills me with energy and joy when I see a field of all of that red! The blossoms formed such rhythmic rows as they iced the rolling hills that I set out to capture that harmony and movement in this piece. Painted with extremely thick oil paint and palette knives to achieve depth and texture, the resulting image comes to life and is loaded with color and excitement.

After delivering new art to my gallery, The Good Art Company, in Fredericksburg we ventured north to the Willow City Loop to take in the breathtaking vistas and plethora of wildflowers that normally fill the landscape there. I love this spot as you ascend hill after hill to arrive at the top with beautiful views of the valley below. Erecting my easel along the roadside, I set out to capture the bluebonnets framing the foreground in front of this spectacular view. The road on the right invites you to leisurely drive through the loop while the sun just starts to set. I hope you enjoy the journey and all of your cares drift away!

I painted these Texas Bluebonnets and wildflowers with extremely thick oil paint and palette knives to achieve depth and texture. The resulting image comes to life and is loaded with color and movement.

It’s so exciting to see a massive carpet of blue across our usually green hills, and I love how the bluebonnets signal that spring has arrived! Our second stop on our Texas adventure was again north of Austin, along this striking hillside. I was drawn to the one lone tree on the horizon and the patterns the bluebonnets formed leading your eye into the distance. Adding pops of color where the rainbow of wildflowers danced in between the blue also keeps your focus moving from foreground to background and back again. I hope you can feel the joy and energy of springtime in Texas!

It’s so exciting to see a massive carpet of blue across our usually green hills, and I love how the bluebonnets signal that spring has arrived! Our last stop on our Texas adventure was stopping closer to home, near West Texas. The explosion of wildflowers was amazing with practically every color in the rainbow represented. This field was so beautiful that I had to stop and paint it! Even recreating the scene filled me with such joy and contentment. I hope you, too, can feel the elation and energy of springtime in Texas.

I painted these Texas Bluebonnets and wildflowers with extremely thick oil paint and palette knives to achieve depth and texture. The resulting image comes to life and is loaded with color and movement. In this wildflower series, I’ve framed the paintings in espresso with linen liners to focus your eye on the painting and not the frames. These Texas wildflowers look great hung alone or in a grouping with the rest of the “April’s Palette” series!

New “Rhythmic Memories” Textured Oil Painting by Niki Gulley

“Rhythmic Memories”  ©2018 Niki Gulley
12″ x 16″ textured oil painting, framed in espresso

Painted on location at the beach, I loved our view of the ocean off this wooden deck. Relaxing in the rocking chairs while enjoying the gentle swaying motion, listening to the surf lap against the shore and the repetive uprights of the rails with the light raking through the openings created a rhythm all around. I hope you, too, can feel your cares drift away when you gaze into this peaceful scene!
