2 Last Minute Openings for Santa Fe Workshop

“Afternoon in Taos” ©2011 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 14” x 11” • oil

Not the traditional view of Rancho de Taos, but I loved this adobe wall and archway and how the colors set against the turquoise blue sky contrasted beautifully. I liked how the hollyhocks angled into the scene and softened up the adobe mass, while continuing the theme of rounded edges found in the architecture and again in the gorgeous fluffy clouds.

My husband and I have been teaching painting and photography workshops in Italy for the past four years, but we love New Mexico so much, we decided to share our enthusiasm with our students by leading a week-long workshop in Santa Fe this August 7th through 13th. Due to last minute cancellations, we have room for just two more students if you would like to join us for our Plein-Air Painting / Photography Workshop in Santa Fe, New Mexico. We will take you to different picturesque locations daily offering demonstrations, plenty of guidance, and time for sight seeing while you hone your painting and/or photography skills. E-mail Niki Gulley with any questions or to register for this exciting workshop!

Santa Fe Painting & Photography Workshop with Niki Gulley & Scott Williams

“Convergence” Santa Fe, NM ©2011 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 24” x 36” pastel

On our last trip to New Mexico, we pulled over to photograph and paint this magnificent river gorge below. The clouds and light were just beautiful and I loved the contrast between the sun’s orange cast on the rock formations, the blue sky above and the deep purple hues on the distant hills and dramatic shadows. The two rivers converging created a perfect flowing composition, while the foreground rocks and scrub brush nicely anchored the corners of the painting. After being in Dallas surrounded by buildings and concrete, I just love getting to New Mexico with its vast open spaces, gorgeous skies and wild natural landscape, and I hope I can share those feelings with you in “Convergence.”

My husband and I have been teaching painting and photography workshops in Italy for the last four years, but since we love New Mexico so much, we decided to share our enthusiasm with our students and stay a little closer to home by teaching a week-long workshop in Santa Fe this August.

“Flowing Thoughts” textured waterfall oil painting

“Flowing Thoughts” ©2011 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 48” x 30” textured oil on canvas

Just Sold! Rushing, raging waters crash down the cataract plunging unto the rocks below: the cascading, pounding, rhythmic waters wear down the rocks and shape them to its ancient channels. Each brush stroke in this painting brings you closer to this mysterious waterfall as light shimmers and dances through the mists above, encircling energetic textured strokes become the cadence of plummeting waters roaring through the rocks.

Deadline Approaching for Painting / Photo Workshop in Santa Fe, New Mexico

“High Road to Taos” ©2011 Niki Gulley
SOLD • pastel • 14″ x 11″

On our last trip to New Mexico, we were enjoying the scenic route along the high road to Taos from Santa Fe, and marveling at the wide open vistas and beautiful rugged landscape when we came upon these lone sagebrush set against the dramatic white billowing clouds in the background, and we just had to paint and photograph it. Choosing pastels to capture the fleeting moment quickly, I got the scene blocked in just before the wind blew those beautiful clouds away, and the reason why plein air painting is so magical!

New Aspen Tree oil painting by Niki Gulley

“Ivory Refrain” ©2011 Niki Gulley
24” x 30” textured oil on canvas

Scrolling bark peels back like white washed parchment revealing secrets in the deeply textured wood below. A painting of grace and beauty, it’s verticality offset by embracing branches wound round as a sheltering arm. Each stroke is crisp, vivid, defined by thick textured oil, rich colors strike a reververberating chord – purple and the compliment of gold create a visual vibration that resonates in an optical song.
