English Garden oil painting by Niki Gulley

Springtime Reflections ©2011 Niki Gulley
18” x 48” traditional oil on wrap around canvas

Pink, white and purple plump rhododendrons line the paths at the lake’s margin. Heavy blooms drowse along the peaceful pond, its still waters broken only by a swan sailing past. Lush bushes, Arcadian landscape, a rock bridge and a classical Greek temple are serene and silent under the overcast sky. Sunlight starts to peek through the cloud-cast and sparkles across the pond. Painted in traditional oils on a panorama canvas using soft edges and dreamy colors, this is a painting of tranquility and a tribute to the classic English landscape.

Idyllic Village – New oil painting from Austria

8” x 10” oil painting

After teaching our plein air painting / photography workshop in Venice, my husband and I ventured north into Austria and Bavaria, the land of castles and fairytale villages. We found this sleepy little town south of Salzburg and I fell in love with its beauty and charm, and I just had to paint it!

To see “Idyllic Village” and my other recent paintings stop by my studio in Dallas as part of the White Rock Lake Artists’ Studio Tour – Saturday and Sunday. For more information on the Studio Tour, see WhiteRockArtists.com.

Moment of Reflection oil painting

24″ x 18″ oil on canvas

This is another one of my favorite spots in Dallas. Once you climb down the creek’s banks, you’re treated to the peaceful trickling sounds of the gently moving water and you’re surrounded by a canopy of trees, completely eliminating all signs of traffic and city life above. This location reminds me so much of the woods I’d hike through with my parents as a kid on a beautiful, crisp autumn day and all of those happy memories come flowing back. In “Moment of Reflection,” I wanted to share that joy and calm I feel being surrounded by nature.

To see this painting and my latest work in person, visit my booth at the Cottonwood Art Festival in Richardson, TX this weekend, CottonwoodArtFestival.com.

Zen Garden oil painting

“Zen Garden” ©2010 Niki Gulley
10″ x 8″ oil painting
Having grown up in Chicago, this painting is inspired by the Japanese Garden at the Chicago Botanic Gardens since I’ve always loved their grounds ever since I was a little kid. In fact, I painted this piece from a photo I took in high school and have held onto all of these years! I thought it would be fun to paint the scene in thick oil with palette knives. I especially like how the broken color strokes on the water make it look like its surface is shimmering in the sun.
